With mega brands opting out of the runways faster than you can say Joe Fresh, the best way for World MasterCard Fashion Week to turn a new coin is with an influx of new talent. Yesterday’s kaleidoscopic batch of shows served up just that, by way of Sydney, Edmonton and the like. Newest on the scene was Montreal-based Atelier Wonder, with its riotous prints and loyal following of nouveau Club Kids lining the front rows.

Designed by 26-year-old Paulina Wonders, the three season-old label is an Instagram-worthy dream of cacophonous colour combos, mismatched patches and ironic symbolism. This season, Wonders took a dip into Blade Runner territory, emblazoning dresses with video game prints and accessorizing with robot sunglasses. She also entered unfamiliar territory, experimenting for the first time with hand embroidery on a standout coat, covered in sequin shooting stars and the word “Escape” in bright yellow lettering.

Regardless of the growing slickness at the tents, it’s homegrown creativity that keeps things interesting. Wonders has proved she’s got imagination in spades.
