That ’70s look: 8 Style Panel members show off how to rock this season’s biggest trend
If we had to take our pick of which of the Spring 2015 trends everyone is getting on board with, it’s the ‘70s style, hands down. From the runways to the streets outside the shows during Fashion Week, it’s been the decade of choice for the last little while. We’ve even already seen it on the red carpet during the past award season (see: Julianne Moore at BAFTA 2015). And yet, we don’t blame you if you’re still intimidated by the idea of incorporating the trend into your everyday look. Cue our Style Panel. This week, we challenged our panelists to show us how to style this season’s hottest decade for right now. From bell-bottom jeans to fringe accessories, here are seven ways to rock the ’70s style today.

I love the fringe seen on both clothing and accessories in the 1970. It has inspired me to incorporate it into my current wardrobe. The fringe bag lends a playful vibe to a more serious all-leather look. I also love the contrast it brings to the outfit.

My favourite way to style this wonderful decade is with the infamous pants that came out of it, the super flare. They are a wonderful break from the skinny leg that has been on trend for the past decade, and creates the most darling of silhouettes. Often slimming and worn to create volume and height, I love pairing these floral bell-bottoms with textured knits and a great pair boots. Flare pants are so easy to wear, but just make sure they are properly hemmed so the pants aren’t too long or too short.

Riding on the coattails of the ‘70s, I’m fully embracing the jumpsuit. Just when we thought jumpsuits and overalls were a fleeting trend, they are here to remind us that they don’t plan on going anywhere anytime soon.

This amazing vest with its fur collar by Montreal-based label Elama is the perfect way to embrace ‘70s-inspired dressing without looking too thematic. It’s a wonderful piece for layering and its earth tones are easy to work into any look.

The psychedelic ‘70s have definitely made a strong return into the world of fashion and continue to dominate the runways. It should come as no surprise that many of the designers would pay tribute to a decade that so many of them were born in. However what does that mean for the rest of us? Well, don’t go digging through your mom’s wardrobe as this trend is modernized with contemporary touches. Personally I’ve introduced the trend into my wardrobe through subtle details such as the classic ‘70s wide bell sleeves as seen on my Mackage coat and a BCBG Max Azria wide brim hat that was a favourite of the ‘70s vixen, Brigitte Bardot. Both details complement my personal style but add that trendy touch. When it comes to wearing period trends, just make them work for your wardrobe and feel comfortable wearing them.

Even though it’s difficult to part from skinny jeans, I’ve really taken to the 70’s flare jean trend lately. Not only is flare denim one of the most comfortable styles out there, they also pair well with a chunky heel and longline overcoats. My tip is to not over-style flared denim, keep the rest of the your outfit simple and effortless for a finished look.

I channel the ’70s with my high-waist maxi skirt. It definitely translates to the boho-hippy style of the era. High-waist dresses and skirts were perfect in the ’70s for most body styles and that still holds true today. Bold prints were apologetically loud in the ’70s, so I like to have fun with them in this decade.
Not only that, but crop-tops (belly shirts back in my day!) were super popular in the ’70s. To balance my bold printed skirt I opt for a neutral crop top, and layer with a large black shawl. The shawl adds to the gypsy traveler vibe that 70s fashion exuded. Believe it or not, this boho look is perfect for travelling and jet-setting around the world. Not only was the 70s fashioniable, but comfortable as well!
