The Beauty Products We’ll Be Using All Month Long

Chanel Le Volume De Chanel Mascara
LH: So many volumizing mascaras start off promising when I apply (Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir, for instance) but inevitably let me down because by midday, they have left black smudges under my eyes. Chanel Le Volume De Chanel Mascara ($41) is not new to me but it had been so long since I’d used it that I couldn’t remember if it was also guilty of this transgression. Having recently become re-acquainted, I have confirmed it is not. Enhancing this immovable formula is a brush that features a patented “snowflake” design because of its stacked discs that include both long and short bristles and in no way refers to sensitive liberals in case any Trumpsters happen to read this.
Jordan Samuel Skin Hydrate Facial Serum
SM: Thanks to some miraculous blessing from the universe, my skin has always been relatively chill. It’s not that sensitive, I rarely have breakouts (knock on wood) and it’s not super dry. It is however, dehydrated. (Here’s an informative thread on what that means and how it’s different from dry skin. TL;DR? Dry skin lacks oil and dehydrated skin lacks water.) Anyway, needless to say I’m always looking for a good, moisturizing, non-sticky hyaluronic acid serum. Back in the fall, I wrote a story about a new generation of beauty bloggers who are skincare obsessed and very knowledgable when it comes to ingredients and formulations. I spoke to about a dozen bloggers, and though they didn’t all make it into the story, one thing that stuck with me was that nearly every one of them mentioned Jordan Samuel Skin’s Hydrate Facial Serum ($29) as a must-have. I finally tried it last month, and I can see why it’s so popular. Its ingredients aren’t revolutionary—Hyaluronic acid, Vitamin C, cucumber extract and aloe, mostly—but simplicity really is key for a product like this. No frills, no bells and whistles. Just a hella hydrating, soothing and comfortable serum that I can use every day.
SkinCeuticals Retexturing Activator
MC: Come end of November/beginning of December is when my skin really starts to rebel and give me major issues (I’m taking severe dryness, eczema flakes, inflammation, redness, irritation — you name it). I was beginning to experience a pretty bad flare-up when I remembered I had picked up at bottle of SkinCeuticals Retexturing Activator ($90) at a TIFF lounge back in September. After thoroughly reading reviews online, I decided to put it to the test, and was pleasantly surprised that after just one use, my skin felt more hydrated and less inflamed. It didn’t even sting or burn my face when applying, which often happens to me even for products created for the most sensitive of skin types. I’ve been using it twice a day for a week now and my skin looks brighter and more glowy but most importantly, I’m not experiencing any irritation or dryness. I’ve deemed this yet another SkinCeuticals HG item to add to my top shelf.
