How I Got My Best Blonde Ever

Being blonde has been an obsession for most of my life. Growing up, my favourite Disney characters were Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Simba (that coat was the perfect shade of gold). My mom nurtured this fixation, squeezing lemon juice into my hair on summer afternoons so it would lighten. As I approached my teens, I began to crave the saturation that only peroxide could provide. It started out innocently enough—a few babylights to “frame the face”. But pretty soon I had abandoned my tasteful streaks in favour of high-octane blonde, envisioning myself as the missing third piece to an Olsen twin trinity (a persisting aspiration, TBH). My face had never been so framed! Although, I would soon learn that the price for this kind of blonde devotion also meant that my hair had never been so fried.

After a brief dalliance with brunette, I started going to an upscale salon where they (gently) derided me for my irresponsible hair care over the years. A gradual re-blonde process was undertaken. The tasteful highlights returned. I started taking vitamin A pills that had my hair feeling thicker and stronger than ever. But old habits die hard, and the siren call of blinding blonde beckoned once again, this time right before my wedding, when, in panicked hallucinatory state, I flew into the salon and begged them to add more highlights around my already-bleached head. It just seemed essential to the success of the day.

All this is to say that I have a pretty substantial blonde habit. So when our beauty director Lesa Hannah approached me with an opportunity to test out Revlon Professional’s “Blonderful” at The Cellar Salon in Yorkville, I was all in.

Turns out the low down on “Blonderful” is that it’s Revlon Professional’s new in-salon lightening hair colour line, formulated with “Plexforce,” which is a treatment that penetrates the hair fiber to maintain its structural bonds and reduce damage. As someone who has sat through many (many) blonde processing treatments in her life, I can honestly say that I’ve never left an appointment happier with the colour and texture of my hair. The blonde they added integrated seamlessly with my existing colour, helped in part by the fact that they “broke the base” of my uncoloured hair, a process which lightened it and helped to diffuse it with my highlights and new colour. And the texture? I mean, is that the KiraKira app pointed on my mane? NOPE, it’s just looking glossy AF! (That would be the Plexforce, folks.)

Did I mention that they also sent me home with a Bond Maintainer to help preserve my hair until my next treatment? (A retail product from the line you apply onto damp hair before you shampoo). All in all, an excellent blonde experience that I can’t recommend highly enough.

That being said, I do have a fairly light base to begin with, and as I’ve outlined extensively, it has seen its fair share of processing. Rest assured though, the Blonderful line is designed to accommodate bases of varying darkness, and I can attest to the fact that a woman sitting across from me arrived with brunette locks and left looking like Daenerys Targaryen. All you need is the patience of a saint and a dedicated budget, and you too can achieve your blonde dreams!

Now, to restart my campaign to become the third Olsen twin…
