When one of pop music’s definitive rising stars rolls into town, Toronto’s hippest music lovers take note. Case in point: Friday night’s sold-out Solange concert at the Danforth Music Hall. Beyoncé’s little sister proved that she was much more than just that as she sauntered on stage in a beautiful cobalt and brown printed Ostwald Helgason dress, black heeled sandals and a Diana Ross-style afro that seemed to prompt mounting hair-envy with each flick and twist. Solange’s set was stellar, if a bit subdued, and the carefully clothed crowd drank each of the live renditions right up. Double that that for her cover of Selena’s epic ballad “I Could Fall in Love.” And triple that for her popular single “Losing You,” which she pre-empted with an “I want you to dance!” command.

Known for her quirky style—she loves J.Crew and Suno, to name a few—Solange has acquired much love from seriously stylish fans, and Toronto’s show was a veritable who’s who of the fashion industry. Everyone from fashion designer Jeremy Laing to Globe & Mail fashion editor Tiyana Grulovic to budding photographer Petra Collins showed up sporting his or her best layers. Also in the crowd, Phil Villeneuve, editor at Fab Magazine but known to YouTube for his sweet street moves, was invited up on stage to dance alongside Solange and producer/guitarist Dev Hynes, who’d been loosely choreographed all night. (Solange had become a fan after discovering his latest video was set to “Losing You.”) It was pretty adorable, to say the least.

Friday night’s lovefest was totally what this city needed to perk up from those never-ending winter blues. Remember dressing up? It’s fun. Beyoncé who? Just kidding. I could never say that.
