Smash 2017: 33 Photos From Inside Toronto’s Wicked New Art Party
Smash may still be a relatively new party on the Toronto scene, but seeing that hosted another successful art fete at the Gardiner Museum for the second year in a row last Thursday June 22, we say it’s no newb. We might even add it’s become one of the city’s must-attend events of the season.
But before the crowd started rolling in on Thursday’s night of art exploration, we got the opportunity to chat with multi-disciplinary artist, curator and Smash art director Justin Broadbent to give us a run down of what the showcase was all about and what this year’s theme Voyeur-ish meant to him.
“When they asked me to do the second year I was thinking a lot about where we’re at currently with our neighbour’s President and how the world is sort of changing,” says Broadbent during our Facebook Live interview. “We’re getting more and more obsessed with our phones and our social media stuff, so I wanted to explore that – see what other artists would do with that theme.”
Taking over the third floor of Toronto’s Gardiner Museum, local artists like Robin Clason, Tessar Lo and Sammy Rawal showcased their take of the curious theme by sharing their day-to-day experiences through their individual works of art that were inspired by some of the greats: Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, Damien Hirst and Banksy. But artworks aside, there was also plenty of entertainment for the cool Toronto kids to enjoy including beats provided by DJ Killa Kels, a live performance by Miracles (a.k.a Jahmal Padmore) and a dance takeover by Rodney Diverlus.
