Everything That Upset the Internet This Week
What’s the Internet up in arms about this week? A fashion designer insulting a celeb, a five-year-old’s hairstyle and a joke about mental health. Here’s everything you need to know:
Stefano Gabbana called Selena Gomez “ugly”
THE STORY: Dolce & Gabbana designer and co-founder, Stefano Gabbana, commented on a picture of Selena Gomez on Instagram: “È proprio brutta!” The Italian phrase roughly translates to: “she’s really ugly!” The photograph was posted on the account The Catwalk Italia, and showed Gomez wearing different red dresses.
THE REACTION:
dear Stefano Gabbana, it’s because of people like you that young girls around the globe have body image issues. that comment was beyond despicable and you REALLY lost all the respect the fashion world had for you constantly acting so immaturely. no class whatsoever pic.twitter.com/cJkZCoaqeH

Whether you like Selena or not, Stefano Gabbana is a piece of shit and it’s been proven many times. Stop supporting bad people just bc you don’t like the person they attacked.

Considering how many times Selena Gomez has worn Dolce & Gabbana’s designs on some of the biggest red carpet events in the world you would think that the co-founder of #DolceAndGabbana Stefano Gabbana, would have the decency to appreciate the free promotion she gave to his brand. pic.twitter.com/sI9V1iVFdn

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Gabbana is notorious for being a hate-filled troll, and frequently starts spats with celebrities. He’s feuded with Miley Cyrus, made unkind comments about Kate Moss and body shamed Lady Gaga. He’s also dismissed the #MeToo movement and made controversial arguments against gay parenting, calling IVF children “synthetic.” There are lots of reasons to #BoycottDolceGabbana — this is just another.
Kim Kardashian straightened North West’s hair
THE STORY: On the day before North West’s fifth birthday, Kim Kardashian West stepped out with her eldest for a scoop of Cool Mess ice cream in New York City. Little North was rocking a neon pink Adidas track suit with her hair pulled into a sleek high ponytail, her signature curls no where in sight.
THE REACTION:
I really hate how the kardashians keep straightening that poor baby’s hair tho. North west gonna have heat damage before she’s 10- bedore I even knew what a straightener was smh

it’s none of my business but I felt so concerned yesterday when I saw a pic of North West w/ her hair straightened ? like noooo her beautiful curlsssss
— bee? (@SoulBee93) June 15, 2018
North West is still a baby and has straight hair. I know we all had straight hair too at that age but it’s 2018! The enlightened YouTube era! Come on KimberYe get it together

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Wait, are people really out here talking about a five-year-old’s appearance? North West looks happy, and I think that’s what counts. (When I was five-years-old, I was begging my mom to put my pin straight hair into hot rollers for special occasions. So I do hope North knows just how beautiful her head of curls is.)
RuPaul made a bipolar joke
THE STORY: The latest episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race challenged the remaining contestants to design “evil twin” personas. When introducing the challenge, RuPaul encouraged the stars to “board the bipolar express.” Here’s the clip:
The Queens served the yin to their yang in this week's Evil Twins maxi challenge! ?/?

THE REACTION:
If you didn’t take issue with @RuPaul using references to bipolar and dissociative identity disorder to introduce the evil twin challenge, then maybe you should reconsider your relationship with mental health stigma!
Bye.
Vanjie.
Bye.#DragRace

I'm a big fan of @RuPaulsDragRace. I also have bipolar. It not actually super funny. So maybe @RuPaul can toss bipolar jokes, and all other mental disability jokes, into the same dustbin as 'shemail'. #MentalHealth #bipolar #neuroqueer #DragRace #ableism

Also fuck #DragRace tonight. Seriously, trying to do a good and evil thing and then calling it "bipolar" is not only fucking wrong but it's outright dangerous to how people are perceived with it. This is supposed to be my happy place show not this and it can go fuck itself.

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: RuPaul’s Drag Race has created a space on television where difficult—and often ignored—conversations can take place. The show has never shied away from discussions about body-shaming, substance abuse, HIV or hate crimes, among other topics. Mental health in the LGBTQ+ community is something that previous show contestants have spoken about.
Drag often intends to make people uncomfortable—and RuPaul definitely did that here. And so, there are two ways we can look at RuPaul’s comments. Either he is using mental health as an inappropriate punchline, or, he’s reclaiming the topic to rid it of shame. I’m not sure if his joke was necessary—or if it did anything to aid stigmatization—but at least it sparked an interesting conversation.
Eminem Scared Fans By Using Gunshot-Like Sounds During Concert
THE STORY: At last weekend’s Bonnaroo music festival in Tennessee, Eminem performed his 2000 song “Kill You”during his headlining set. At the end of the song, a series of loud gunshot-like sound effects went off, which reportedly “frightened some in the audience, leading some to panic, duck, and run.”
THE REACTION:
Being at a festival/concert in these current times brings new concerns & fears. Had to leave @Eminem set after 3rd gunshot at @Bonnaroo cuz panic was setting in my section (front pit). Extremely realistic &scary! Would have been good to have a warning before show. #irresponsible

coming from a performing stand point, i get the effect of sound effects on stage, but there’s a certain point that cross’s the line. i’m one of eminem’s number 1 fans but to hear 3 gun shots coming straight from his set had me scared af. not gonna lie. especially in this world…
— M (@macykatemusic) June 10, 2018
RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Apparently, Eminem has been doing this little gimmick in his set since 2001. But in today’s climate, it might be better to just cut out the gun shots. If you aren’t going to do it for the comfort of your audience, at least do it out of respect for those who have died in mass shootings. Or, if it’s essential to the “art” of it all, provide a pre-show warning.
