The real TIFF style star? The resort collections spotted all over the red carpet

During this year’s TIFF, the word we read almost as often as “red carpet” or “Martin Sheen” was “Resort,” as in resort collections. Indeed, no designer dominated the premieres and parties, but these collections certainly did, popping up on nearly every major red carpet. Our favourite was Carey Mulligan‘s celestial Christopher Kane dress, but Emma Stone (in Stella McCartney), Rebecca Hall and Jennifer Connelly (both in YSL) also chose looks from this “season” (can we call it that?). Freida Pinto wins for most resort-filled TIFF wardrobe, trotting out Alexander McQueen for the You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger premiere, an aqua Narciso Rodriguez for the presser and a fuchsia leopard-print Marchesa for the Miral party.

It’s not difficult to understand why these looks are getting play: Resort–or cruise–has often been the poor cousin (or, rather, very, very rich cousin who can buy a brand new wardrobe for her fabulous holidays), attention-wise, to ready-to-wear and haute couture, but has lately, along with the pre-fall lines, been seen as a very saleable option for retailers. The collections are getting more notice and are becoming decidedly cooler. (See: Kane) Plus they’re not in stores yet, so celebs have something to trot out that won’t have already been seen on a hundred other people.
