The Princess Bride 30 Years Later: Where Are They Now?
The Princess Bride is turning 30 years old this Fall. (Inconceivable! We know.)
The cult-classic fantasy film was first released in 1987, but continues to be quoted regularly in casual conversation—even by those of us born after its premiere. Between the true love, the ROUS (Rodents of Unusual Size) and that super sexy moustache/mask combo, this movie is timeless.
But where are Buttercup and her dude crew now? Aren’t you just dying to find out what happened to the cast after Grandfather closed the story book? As you wish.
Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright)
Princess Buttercup grew up to become General Antiope, the Amazon warrior who trains Wonder Woman to conquer the outside world. This, at least, is the narrative that the Internet took hold of when Robin Wright starred in DC Comics’ most recent film, Wonder Woman. I prefer to believe that Princess Buttercup grew up to become the Lady Macbeth-esque heroine of Netflix’s hit political drama House of Cards. Sure she’s evil, but Claire Underwood is my favourite on-screen superwoman—and Wright plays her with perfection. The 51-year-old actress also has a role in the upcoming (and highly hyped) Blade Runner 2049, where she plays a character by the name Lieutenant Joshi. You can’t bet this character is a badass too. No matter the role, Robin Wright’s still fierce, she’s still poise, and she’s still beautiful.
Westley (Cary Elwes)
Cary Elwes isn’t conquering the world with a hit streaming service show and Blockbuster film franchise, but according to his IMDB page, the 54-year-old British actor has kept busy. Apparently he was in Saw, which I didn’t know because I don’t watch that scary nonsense. He’s also done voice work on a couple of video games, so I guess that’s pretty cool. In 2012, Elwes was inspired to write a behind-the-scenes book about the making of the movie in honour of its 25th anniversary. The #1 New York Times best seller is cleverly titled, As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride.
Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin)
“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” I would really like so see Mandy Patinkin deliver this line as Saul Berenson, the counterterrorism operative he plays on the Emmy-winning Showtime series, Homeland.
Vizzini (Wallace Shawn)
I know Wallace Shawn as Blair Waldorf’s lovable step-father on Gossip Girl—but I’ve been informed that the 73-year-old actor has had a long and fruitful career as a voice actor, playwright, essayist and comedian. For example: did you know he was also the voice of Rex in Toy Story 1, 2, AND 3?
Fezzik (Andre the Giant)
The professional French wrestler and actor—who famously feuded with Hulk Hogan— died in his sleep of congestive heart failure in 1993, at the age of 46. We like to think he’s still the biggest and the strongest (and he doesn’t even exercise) in the wrestling ring in the sky.
Billy Crystal (Miracle Max)
30 years later, and Billy Crystal actually looks younger than his Princess Bride character. The Saturday Night Live alum left the King’s service and went on to star on Broadway and hit films including When Harry Met Sally, Running Scared and City Slickers. He’s hosted the Academy Awards nine times AND he’s the voice of Mike Wazowski in Monsters Inc.
