As I mentioned earlier this month, this year was my first time co-chairing Operanation, the annual gala benefiting the Canadian Opera Company’s Ensemble Studio, amongst other things. As such, it’d be something along the lines of self-important to dub Operanation 2014 the best party of the season/year/century so I will refrain. Instead, I’ll say that it was a very fun time.

The gala, a Spanish-inspired rave (naturally!), brought everything from neon installations to churros to an hourly drag queen flash mob lead by Toronto performance artist Keith Cole to the Four Seasons Centre, to the delight of over a thousand partygoers. With much of the fashionable crowd sporting Operanation 2014’s limited-edition slap bracelets designed by Beaufille, Kaelen and Sarah Stevenson, the nineties proved as enduring as ever. The night’s spirited vibe reached a fever pitch as French dance-pop group Yelle took to the stage around 11p.m. for a performance of their latest hits in collaboration with members of the COC’s Ensemble Circle. Filling the venue’s four levels, the crowd erupted in one giant dance party, one that didn’t end until the wee hours of the night.
