Everything Coming to Netflix Canada in November

She’s Gotta Have It
This month in things you didn’t know you needed: Spike Lee’s debut feature film is getting the Netflix nostalgia treatment. The iconic Nola Darling—your favourite self-identifying “sex-positive, polyamorous pansexual”—will be played by breakout star DeWanda Wiseis in the 10-episode makeover of the 1986 movie. She’s finding herself, following her dreams, and juggling relationships three men: a “spontaneous” model; a mature businessman; and a jokester. The film had, we’ll say, issues, but the trailer for the TV reboot makes Darling’s story of female sexuality look more relevant than ever for 2017.
Mudbound
If you need any further proof that Mudbound is the must-see movie of the Fall, read my review of the film’s cast-dinner-turned-dance-party at the Toronto International Film Festival. Dee Rees’ film tells the story of two families, both at odds and tied together, who are struggling to get by in the racially divided Deep South during World War II. But it’s more than a sobering period piece about 1940s race relations in America: Mudbound is compelling commentary on timeless struggles that we all can relate to. Could this be the film that wins Netflix its first Oscar? Some think so.
Godless
What do you get when you toss Jeff Daniels into the Wild West with a bunch of badass women? A Steven Soderbergh-produced streaming series on Netflix, obviously. Godless is about a ruthless outlaw who terrorizes the West in search of a former member of his gang. He finds the runaway in a quiet town of ladies—and these ladies have guns. And they know how to use them. Giddy up cowgirls! (And boys.)
