The Trailer for Maniac, the New Sci-Fi Series Starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, Looks Pretty Wild

“Once you begin to appreciate the structure of the mind, there’s no reason to believe anything about us can’t be changed. Pain can be destroyed. The mind can be solved,” says Dr James K Mantleray in upcoming Netflix series Maniac.

And like moths to a flame, Annie and Owen—played by Emma Stone and Jonah Hill—are drawn right in. The human mind is endlessly fascinating, but for those struggling to take command of their own, it can be equally frightening. For Annie and Owen, the promise of a vague pharmaceutical trial that can solve all their problems (in “aimless” Annie’s case, it’s her broken relationship with her mother and sister, while for wealthy and entitled Owen, it’s his professionally disputed struggles with schizophrenia) is too alluring to pass up. They volunteer for the drug trial, strap themselves into terrifying-looking chairs, and that’s when all hell breaks loose. Think elaborate costumes, mystical landscapes, shoot-outs, anger, confusion—all taking place in another reality. Basically, as Annie puts it, “This is some multi-reality brain magic shit.”

Based in part on a Norwegian television series by the same name, this trippy mini-series also stars Justin Theroux as Dr Mantleray, the mastermind behind the trial, and Sally Field as what seems to be the only voice of reason. The dark comedy, directed by True Detective’s Cary Fukunaga, will land in our Netflix queues on September 21. You can watch the full trailer, which dropped yesterday, below.
