How Lady Gaga’s next job is bringing her one step closer to an Oscar

There is no such thing as a steady career in the entertainment business. Nobody knows this more than Lady Gaga. At the tender age of 30, the Italian-American singer/actress has had her fair share of massive Billboard hits (14 No. 1 singles) and career flops (ArtPop). She’s come back from controversies (broken engagements), bad collab choices (her ill-advised R.Kelly duet) and so much naysaying from critics and heroes (Madonna called Gaga’s “Born This Way” “reductive”) that she’s probably thought of packing up her meat dress and saying goodbye to the spotlight for good. However, time has told us that Lady G is no quitter.

Fresh off her Golden Globe win from her scene-eating role as The Countess in FX’s American Horror Story, Gaga’s latest gig brings her closer to the Oscar contender list. Actor Bradley Cooper recently announced that he will be directing and starring in a brand new remake of the classic film A Star Is Born with Gaga as lead. It was reported by Deadline to be Beyoncé’s next big gig, but rumours are swirling that Queen B turned it down.

Janet Gaynor, Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand—in the 1937, 1954 and 1976 versions of A Star Is Born—previously played the lead role. All three films made career-making waves and gave Gaynor, Garland and Streisand a chance at Oscar gold (Babs actually won for Original Song that year, along with her writing partner).

This—and a soon-to-be-released back-to-her-roots dance album—may re-launch Gaga her into the same kind of stratosphere of success she experienced when “Bad Romance” first took over the planet in 2009. Those watching Gaga’s trajectory know that she has as much tenacity as Garland and Streisand and she’s definitely hoping her Star Is Born role will secure a golden statue of her own.
