Happy August long weekend my fellow Canadians! As always, there were lots of hot topics creating buzz on the web this week. So if you feel like “getting into it” with a friend, family member, or total stranger over the next three day, here is everything you need to know. Isn’t controversy fun?
Megan Fox lets her son wear dresses
THE STORY: Actress Megan Fox — who rarely shares pictures of her family — posted an Instagram photo that shows her son Noah, 4, in a Disney princess dress.

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Calm down haters: it’s 2017. We shouldn’t be forcing gender roles onto children. “Noah wears dresses, so there are no rules,” Fox said during an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live in February 2016. “You can be whatever you want to be in my house!” And, lest we confuse gender with an article of clothing: this is a kid dressing up as a cool Disney princess. Would the Twitter gender-police be outraged if a young girl dressed up like Batman? Who wouldn’t want to be Elsa, amiright?

THE STORY: Siesta Key was suppose to be MTV’s next gen Laguna Beach: a docuseries about a group of good looking young people with rich parents and a lot of #firstworldproblems. Except viewers began noticing some alarming content on star Alex Kompothecras’s Instagram page — and on the pages of his friends. From using a dog as shark bait to dragging a shark in a disturbing video, Alex is now being called out for multiple counts of animal abuse from animal rights activists.

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Yikes. In the wake of the viral controversy, multiple cast members (including those uninvolved) have been the victim of death threats. This is, after all, a show about douchey, privileged guys who live on the gulf of Mexico. What do people expect? This probably should never have been a TV show in the first place. Here’s how MTV responded to the outrage: “We’ve spoken to Alex and many others at length, and it’s clear that he was not on the boat nor played any role in this incredibly disturbing incident. We hope the serious threats unfairly being made against Alex and the other cast members – for something they had absolutely nothing to do with – stop.”

A retailer is selling a “refugee dress”
THE STORY: UZINYC, a small Brooklyn-based fashion retailer, is selling a sleeveless cotton shift dress, and it’s named the “refugee dress.”

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: WTF were they thinking? Co-founder Mari Gustafson explained in an email to Mic: “We named the dress in 2007 when we could not see ourselves escaping the reality of a global economy spinning out of control. We feel that it is important to keep these issues within public discourse. The American economy has recovered, and through perseverance and luck our company has recovered as well. We are now able to provide jobs for others and give them a sense of hope and stability.” Again…what?
The company has since decided to rename the Refugee Dress as the “Oxford Dress,” and the change has already gone into effect on its website.

Kylie Jenner’s b-day cosmetics cost more this year
THE STORY: Every year, Kylie Jenner celebrates her birthday with a limited edition Kylie cosmetics collection. This year’s collection features pink, glitter, confetti, and bows, and new limited-edition products — and it costs nearly double last year’s gold-themed package. The Kylie 20th Birthday Collection bundle costs $325, compared to $125 for last year’s.

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Is it pretty? Yes. Is it overpriced? Absolutely. But after two days, the collection is almost completely sold out — people are willing to spend an outrageous amount of money on this stuff. Way to go Kylie, know what you’re worth.
