Everything that Upset the Internet this Week

It’s Friday, Friday, Gotta get down on Friday… And as always, there were lots of hot topics creating buzz on the web this week. So if you feel like “getting down” with a friend, family member, or total stranger over the next couple of days, here is everything you need to know. Isn’t controversy fun?

Amazon unveils Amazon Key

THE STORY: Amazon Key, which includes a smart lock and security camera, will let delivery people in your front door to drop off your packages. BUT it will also let you keep an eye on them, from wherever you are.

THE REACTION:

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: This sounds like something from a Black Mirror episode. Just how far are we willing to let tech companies invade our private spaces? We don’t want the government in our bedrooms, but we’re going to let Amazon (and Google, Apple etc.) walk through our front doors?

But also…has anyone heard of Airbnb or Uber? These innovations let strangers into your homes and your cars, and these companies faced the same criticisms when they were introduced. And hey, they’re doing just fine. I would let a stranger drop a package through my front door even if I couldn’t watch them. But maybe that’s just me.

UK opposes the word ‘pregnant woman’ because it excludes trans people

THE STORY: The UK government has said the term “pregnant woman” should not be used in a UN treaty because it “excludes” transgender and intersex males.

THE REACTION:

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Calm down everyone. This is a story about protecting everyone who deserves protection, and it was twisted into something else. The initial article reported that the Foreign Office had written to the UN encouraging them to make a change to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which states that the death penalty “shall not be carried out on pregnant women”. At no point did the UK object the term ‘pregnant woman’ and denounce its validity. A Foreign Office spokeswoman told The Guardian, “we strongly support the right to life of pregnant women, and we have requested that the human rights committee does not exclude pregnant transgender people from that right to life.”

Is The Nightmare Before Christmas a Halloween movie?

THE STORY: Henry Selick, the 64-year-old director of The Nightmare Before Christmas, recently attempted to settle the age old debate by offering his thoughts on the movie, which sees a Halloween-themed character try to takeover Christmas. Speaking at a Q&A at the Telluride Horror Show in Colrado, Selick insisted that, despite certain holiday themes, it is most certainly “a Halloween movie.”

THE REACTION:

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: It’s 2017. Watch the movie whenever you want.

Alexander Skarsgård’s is bald (ish)

THE STORY: Alexander Skarsgard stepped out on the red carpet at Louis Vuitton’s NYC launch of its Volez, Voguez, Voyagez exhibit. His new hair—or rather, lack there of—stole the show.

THE REACTION:

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Is he playing Prince William? Because I would line up to watch that on screen.
