Everything That Upset The Internet This Week

What is the web-o-sphere angry about this week? Drake’s potential new bae, Tyga’s comments about his ex and a missed casting opportunity for the movie, Elephant Man. Here’s everything you need to know.

Drake is dating an 18 year old?

THE STORY: Last weekend, model Bella Harris posted photos of herself and Drake looking pretty cozy on Instagram. In the pictures, her arm is wrapped tightly around his shoulders and their faces are touching as they smile for the camera. The caption reads, “No place I’d rather be.” It didn’t take long for the rumour mill to start and dozens of articles began popping up about Drake’s potential new girlfriend. When people realized the model was only eighteen years old and had just graduated high school, the conversation began to change. It wasn’t just newsworthy that Drake may be dating, but it was also newsworthy that he was dating someone so young. The initial Instagram post by Harris began to fill with the opinions of people who had A LOT to say.

THE REACTION:

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Let’s just start out by saying that there is no evidence that these two are dating. Is there a bit of chemistry in the photos? Absolutely. But it’s not really fair of anyone to bombard Harris’ Instagram account when nobody knows the full story. In fact, HotNewHipHop reported that the pair has known each other for a while and that Harris modelled for OVO’s clothing line last year. Despite all the speculation, Harris doesn’t seem that phased, posting another photo to her account a couple of days later simply captioned, “goodnight” .

At the same time, we can understand why people might be hesitant to support this relationship–if it’s even real. Harris just graduated high school and with Drake celebrating his 32nd birthday this fall, there’s definitely an age gap. Some are even comparing the relationship to Tyga dating Kylie Jenner. In their (also controversial) case, Tyga and Jenner were clearly dating before Jenner turned 18–Tyga is seven years older. Anyway, now that we’re on the topic of the ex-couple…

Tyga says he ‘had a lot to do’ with Kylie Jenner’s career

THE STORY: Tyga went on Nicki Minaj’s Beats 1 radio show, Queen Radio, on Thursday and obviously the topic of his ex, Kylie Jenner, came up. During the interview he was asked if he felt that he’d helped at all in establishing Jenner’s career (she’s on track to become the youngest self-made billionaire, according to Forbes). He didn’t hold back in his response.

“You gotta look at the before and after. She always had a platform and she was always destined to be what she was going to be regardless, but, when I stepped in, there was a lot of codes being taught.”

Jenner has been clocked multiple times, along with many of the Kardashians, for cultural appropriation, particularly when it comes to black culture. Therefore, Tyga’s next quote is pretty troubling.

“It was like, you could do this, you should start this, you should start doing your hair like this, you should add that because you need black people to f— with you. If you ain’t got black people behind you, you ain’t got nothing.”

He went on to say that he helped with Jenner’s makeup company, Kylie Cosmetics by coming up with names and colours.

THE REACTION:

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: We should mention that Tyga made sure to say that he didn’t “need credit” for anything in the interview, but that seems a little odd considering he spent the whole time taking credit for parts of Jenner’s career. It also shouldn’t go unmentioned that this happened on Queen Radio, which is run by Nicki Minaj. This was another reason why people got upset. Jenner and Minaj have been involved in some recent beef, with Minaj blaming her and her boyfriend Travis Scott for her album not doing as well as she thought it should.

“Like you really brought out Tyga?” one user tweeted. “You must be salty as hell.”

We can also understand why people were upset about the comments about Kylie’s appearance. As previously stated, Jenner has gotten into trouble for cultural appropriation in the past, so it was disappointing for many that Tyga would be pushing that.

Lastly, it just seemed way off base for Tyga to claim he put Jenner on the map. When you’re born into a family as famous as the Kardashians, you’re not just on the map, you’re the capital city. Of course, every person you date will influence you in some way or another, especially when you’re young and finding yourself. But Tyga’s comments go beyond that and it definitely seemed a little immature.

The Elephant Man remake is being criticized for their latest casting choice

THE STORY: Charlie Heaton, best known for his role as Jonathan Buyers in the uber-popular TV series, Stranger Things, was recently cast as the lead in The Elephant Man.  The role is that of Joseph Merrick, a man who grows increasingly deformed and ends up in an exhibit for “human oddities.” The movie has been criticized for choosing Heaton to play the part, instead of an actor with actual disabilities.

THE REACTION: VisABLE is a talent agency who works toward getting actors with disabilities into the mainstream media. “Irrespective of whether Charlie Heaton is the best person for the role, actors with disabilities were not even given the chance,” said Louise Dyson, founder of the agency to BBC News. Scope, a charity in the UK, also spoke out, with Phil Talbot saying, “Disabled actors still often face huge barriers to break in to the business, not only are the roles few and far between, but castings and locations are often not accessible.

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: It’s definitely disappointing to see another opportunity for disabled actors being passed up. But in this case, it’s particularly disappointing just because The Elephant Man is one of the most recognizable films when it comes to portraying a character with disabilities. Disabled actors already face an extreme lack of casting, so it seemed like a movie like this would have been the perfect opportunity. Ultimately, they weren’t even given the chance to try.
