Beyoncé Launches ‘Formation’ Scholarship for ‘Bold, Creative’ Women in College
OK ladies, time to get in formation: Beyoncé wants to help you go to college.
To celebrate the one-year anniversary of her iconic visual album, Lemonade (which came out April 23, 2016), the 35-year-old superstar is launching a scholarship program that will assist four female students (incoming, current or graduate) further their studies in creative arts, music, literature or African-American studies.
Dubbed “Formation Scholars” (after her powerful pro-black single), the scholarship aims to “encourage and support young women who are unafraid to think outside the box and are bold, creative, conscious and confident,” according to a statement on Beyoncé’s official website. The program is part of the songstress’s #BeyGood initiative, whose mission is to “make the world better, one good charitable action at a time.”
The scholarships will be awarded for the 2017-2018 academic year to four students from four different colleges: Berklee College of Music, Howard University, Parsons School of Design and Spedman College.
As Vogue notes, the Formation scholarship is especially important right now, given that U.S. President Trump is threatening to cut all funding to the National Endowment for the Arts while Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is rolling back protections for student loan borrowers, which will make paying back loans much more difficult.
