How to Remove Makeup While On the Go, as Tested by Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell

Rachel Goswell isn’t wearing a stitch of makeup when we meet at Fran’s diner in Toronto on a frigid November morning. It’s how the vocalist and guitarist of English band Slowdive—who are in the midst of a North American tour—rolls day to day, but for shows, putting on her face is part of Goswell’s pre-gig ritual.

“I always have winged liner and red lips,” she says over tea. “I will quite often add glittery eyeshadow in neutral colours, and sometimes I do reds and oranges. It’s always fairly dramatic.” But once the roadies have loaded up the gear and it’s time to board the bus and head to the next tour stop, removing her makeup before bedding down is a struggle for Goswell.

There is hot water on the bus, but the tanks are filled in gas station bathrooms, which is hardly appealing. And she hasn’t been able to find a high-performing makeup remover that doesn’t require water. “Every single thing I buy is never good enough,” she says. “I have about six different ones at the moment.”

To assist, we sent Rachel Goswell off with her own kit. Here are five of our favourite on-the-go cleansing products.
