May Mani of the Month: A Geometric, Modern Take on Neutrals

Who says neutrals are boring? These nails from NYC-based manicurist Alicia Torello are anything but.

Welcome to our Mani of the Month series, where we attempt to cut down your time spent staring into the abyss that is the nail salon wall of polish colours by hand-picking a mani that’s recently caught our eye.

Neutral nails work year round, but with the temperature rising (albeit slowly) and flowers starting to bloom all around, spring is the perfect time to wander away from the dark side and warm up to softer hues. But neutrals need not be boring. Case in point: this modern mani from NYC-based nail artist Alicia Torello. Her work has appeared in Vogue, W and Harper’s Bazaar, in ad campaigns for Yves Saint Laurent, Diane Von Furstenburg, Dior and more, and on red carpets and runways all over the world.

To get the look at home, all you’ll need is a high-shine clear polish, one swipe of taupe and one swipe of blue-grey polish overtop. Torello used Chanel’s “Organdi” and “Washed Denim”, but this manicure would be equally striking with another shade of polish swapped in for blue-grey. (Think pastel pink or neon orange.) Here are some essentials you’ll need to attempt Torello’s artful take on neutral nails.
