Kylie Jenner is Releasing Blushes—But They’re Super Problematic

Another day, another Kylie Cosmetics drama. Between highlighters that arrive empty, smelly eyeshadows, and lip shade controversies, the brand hasn’t exactly been enjoying a walk in the park.

And even still, we’ve been rooting for Kylizzle. Factory mishaps happen (though maybe not at this rate…) and Kylie Cosmetics does reissue new products if a customer complains. However, we just can’t get behind her upcoming releases: Kylie Cosmetics blushes. The star shared a sneak peek on Snapchat, and while the packaging (seen above) is obviously cute, we couldn’t help but cringe when she snapped a photo of the blush names.

While “X Rated,” “Virginity” and “Hot and Bothered” are kind of awkward and cringe-worthy, we’d never shame anyone, let alone an adult capable of making her own decisions in regards to sex and sexuality, for choosing them. But it’s the cotton candy pink shade name, “Barely Legal,” that really made us uncomfortable. Allow us to explain.

As you know, Kylie has been dating rapper Tyga for a few years now. The two met when he performed at Kendall Jenner’s Sweet 16 bash, back when Kylie was only 14 and he was 22. (Yes, he’s a staggering eight years older than her. NBD later in life, but pretty weird when one half of the couple is a teen. But we’ll get to that in a sec.)

Kylie’s seen doing some awkward flirting in the above clip, which is normal, considering she was 14 (!!!) but that’s all fine and well.

Fast forward two years, and 16-year-old Kylie and 24-year-old Tyga allegedly started dating. Yes, the two have been on and off since, and are both of legal age of consent now but it wasn’t always that way. And once you add in big sis Khloe’s interview in which she defended a then-17-year-old Kylie’s dating life, the whole thing becomes…not great. In case you need a refresher, Khloe told Complex, “I think at 16 I was probably fucking someone that was in their 20s, for sure. I wouldn’t say I was even dating, probably just sleeping with them. But again, Kylie is not a normal 17-year-old.”

happy birthday baby ?

So yeah, we have a real issue with Kylie naming one of her blush shades (a product that many underage teens—a large part of her brand’s demo—will buy, btw!) “Barely Legal.” It serves to glamorize the (illegal) way that Kylie and Tyga’s relationship came to be, and we can’t get behind that. Here’s hoping the youngest Jenner realizes how harmful this could be and changes the shade name.
