If you’re like us, you use your makeup brushes almost every day. At that rate, it doesn’t take long before the bristles are teaming with residual makeup, body oils, bacteria and flakes of dead skin. (Yes, that’s right: dead. Skin. Flakes.) While it’s probably a no brainer that you should clean your makeup brushes on a regular basis, it can be tricky to do it properly without damaging the bristles. Fear not! We have step-by-step instructions that show you how to deep clean natural and synthetic bristle brushes in seven easy steps.

Here’s what you’ll need:
Makeup brushes (we used EF Studio‘s Essential Brush Set, $75, ebeauty.ca)
Baby shampoo, such as Aveeno Baby Essential Moisture shampoo ($7, well.ca )
Sponge
Dish soap, such as Palmolive dish soap ($4, well.ca)
Antibacterial brush spray (we used Sephora Collection Daily Brush Cleaner, $14, sephora.com)
Paper towel
Rubbing alcohol
