If you’re a fan of loose curls and beachy waves, listen up. While backstage at the Tanya Taylor Fall 2013 show I witnessed an incredibly inventive way to add movement and texture to hair without relying on a curling iron.
Justin German, Pantene Pro-V’s consulting stylist, wanted “dropped out waves” for the ’60s-inspired look, which meant no structured ringlets were welcome. Instead, German added texture and movement to the hair by rolling pieces up into pin curls and setting them with a quick clamp of the flatiron. “To make it a little more random we [rolled] some one way and some the other way,” German explained of the technique. “We didn’t want it to look like it was done with a curling iron.” Finally, he set everything in place with a quick spritz of Pantene Pro-V Stylers Flexible Hold Hairspray.
The result of this pin curl and flatiron method is a perfectly loose curl—exactly the “dropped out wave” German was going for. Think Kristen Stewart or Selena Gomez hair: it’s hair that has texture and movement but without the fussiness. Not only that, the technique is so easy to do (grab some hair, roll it up, flatiron it, let it fall, repeat!) that it really is as effortless as it looks.
As for the rest of the backstage beauty at Tanya Taylor Fall 2013, Cover Girl makeup pro Greg Wencel had an equally inventive trick for perfecting the cat-eye liner that all models wore. While the look was meant to evoke a girly, ’60s vibe, Wencel didn’t want the eyeliner to flip out too much—instead the ends were kept straight. While he obviously had no problems freehanding this line with Cover Girl LineBlast 24HR Eyeliner, he demonstrated a foolproof trick for eyeliner novices: use a strip of scotch tape as a stencil. Backstage beauty has never seemed so simple.
