Why French girl beauty is overrated (according to a French girl)

She may be a bit more under the radar, but a quick Google search of Alma Jodorowsky reveals that she checks all the boxes to qualify as a Parisian It girl. In addition to being an actress (she appeared in Blue is the Warmest Colour and stars in Kids in Love with Cara Delevigne next year), model and singer, she’s also earned the seal of approval from Karl himself, having posed in his book The Little Black Jacket. She also joins Caroline de Maigret as an ambassador for Lancôme, fronting the campaign for Hypnôse Volume-à-Porter mascara, which just launched, and their forthcoming Spring 2016 collection.

And not only does she look the part in person, wearing cap-toed Chanel flats, black skinny jeans and a white silk blouse with a black bow the day we meet, but her beauty routine fits with the image. She cleanses with a rose-scented foam from Nuxe, doesn’t leave the house without a few lashings of Lancôme Hypnôse, prefers moisturizer to foundation, uses Homeoplasmine on her lips and lets her hair air dry after washing with Leonor Greyl shampoo. But mention the concept of French girl beauty and she delivers a kick to our messy-hair loving hearts. “I think it’s a bit overrated,” she says. “It’s true that there’s something about effortlessness. It’s cool, it’s nice. You’re being yourself and not trying to look like a picture in a magazine. But at the same time, the problem is that in France, I feel like people are too afraid to be playful.”

For Jodorowsky, playtime with makeup is often for when she performs with her dreampop-influenced band Burning Peacocks (she plays keyboard and sings). While she’s still trying to figure out her onstage look, for now it often involves a red lip. “Sometimes I’ll wear glitter on my eyes or do very strong eyeliner,” she says. And despite her own 18.1k following on Instagram (btw you’ll never catch her posting an #iwokeuplikethis selfie, deeming them “egocentric”) her favourite person to follow herself is her mother, who keeps it private. “It’s just me, my sister, and my boyfriend who follow her. It’s the best account.”
