Get the look! We have the secrets behind Lea Michele, Emma Stone, Kristen Wiig, and Zooey Deschanel’s hair and makeup from the Golden Globes red carpet!

Here’s the thing about award shows: you don’t realize how versatile a starlet’s hair and makeup are until you see all the photos the next day. Because after the show ends, the parties begin—and while changing an outfit between events is common, hair and makeup usually stay the same.

Not only that, it’s always impressive to see how well an updo holds or a smoky eye lasts throughout the night, proving that product and technique really do make all the difference! We got the low down from some of the stylists responsible for making the starlets look their best at the Golden Globes—and we’re sharing their tips with you!

Dove celebrity stylist Mark Townsend created this messy-in-the-right-ways updo for Lea Michele, saying her Marchesa gown was the inspiration for a “romantic and sexy French twist with lots of texture.” Townsend started with freshly washed hair and applied mousse before blow drying, scrunching the hair as it dried to encourage natural waves. He then curled Michele’s hair in two-inch sections, locking in the style with a texturizing spray. Townsend gathered the hair into a French twist, and—here’s our favourite part—he sprayed the bobby pins with Dove Refresh+Care Invigorating dry shampoo ($8 at drug stores, available in February 2012) before securing them in the hair. This gives the pins extra hold and friction, ensuring Michele’s style stayed put all night long.

Chanel celebrity makeup artist Rachel Goodwin called Emma Stone’s Golden Globes makeup “classic yet edgy,” thanks to her use of pewter and gunmetal shades. (The colours were chosen to complement the metallic detailing on Stone’s Lanvin dress.) After lining the entire eye with Chanel’s Intense eye pencil in “Noir” ($30 at department stores), Goodwin created a dramatic eye shape using Revlon’s ColorStay 16H eyeshadow quad in “Precocious” ($13 at drug stores) followed by many coats of mascara. To ensure focus stayed on Stone’s dramatic eye makeup, Goodwin applied a light-pink lipstick—Revlon ColorBurst lip butter in “Lollipop” ($10 at drug stores).

“For the Golden Globes I wanted Kristen Wiig‘s hair to be cool and modern, so we kept her hair down and created loose waves with lots of texture,” says Dove celebrity stylist Mark Townsend. We agree: Wiig’s dark, wavy hair certainly stood out on the red carpet. To start building the waves, Townsend applied Dove Style+Care Nourishing Amplifier mouse ($8 at drug stores, available February 2012) to her freshly washed hair. Once dry, three-inch sections of hair were wrapped around a two-inch curling iron. Townsend then added movement to Wiig’s hair by breaking up the waves—he emulsified a small amount of Dove Style+Care Frizz-Free shine cream-serum ($8 at drug stores, available February 2012) in his hands and raked his fingers through her hair. Wiig’s look was finished with an all-over spritz of hairspray.

One glance at Zooey Deschanel’s Golden Globe manicure will tell you that she likes to have fun with her style. Makeup artist Jorjee Douglass got the inspiration for this ‘60s look from the British TV show The Avengers—and Deschanel played the part well. Of her eye makeup, Douglass says: “I kept the mod inspiration on the eyes, creating a cat-eye shape. I used Rimmel London’s Glam Eyes professional liquid liner ($8 at drug stores) on the top of the lid and a feathered line on the bottom. I topped the liner with Rimmel London Glam Eyes HD quad eyeshadow ($8 at drug stores) in “Black Cab” and “English Rose” for a soft smoky eye.” With so much focus on Deschanel’s eyes, it was important to keep the rest of her makeup very minimal: her lipstick of choice was Rimmel London Lasting Finish Intense Wear lipstick in “Nude Pink” ($6 at drug stores).
