Spring 2017 Trend Report: How to Wear the Oxford Shirt Now
When Victoria Beckham posts a pic wearing one of the season’s hottest trends, you sit up and take notice. Recently, the 42-year-old designer (and mummy of four) posted a selfie, with her eldest son Brooklyn Beckham, in a cool new version of the classic oxford shirt. The It Brit’s look is trending this spring, with the traditional button-down making the leap from corporate to new generation quirky. It’s classic shirting—gone wild. Best of all? You can start wearing this trend NOW, because of its cool, seasonless appeal. Wear a dress version (belted) with your tights and boots now, and with bare legs and platforms (the new shoe for spring) when the temperature soars.
Looking for a little inspo? Balenciaga showed a trad version with plenty of girly glam, thanks to the retro bow at the neck and cropped sleeves. Rag & Bone opted for an oversized borrowed-from-your-boyfriend look, featuring a crisp white collar and cuffs (a throwback to the 80s). Over at Sacai, wide vertical stripes and a slouchy silhouette gave a graphic spin to this trend. Add in a deconstructed skirt, artfully tattered, and the traditional oxford morphs into a cool-girl must-have.
But not all pinstriped shirts have been reworked this spring. At Prada, it was business as usual, except for the picnic-ready plaid bralette layered on top. The picnic theme showed up at Off-White, too—the barely-there pinstripes resembled summer-ready seersucker. The fabric didn’t steal the spotlight though, that honour belonged to the top’s cascading ruffled sleeve. Worn with denim, this look is sure to become Instagram gold.
A relaxed two-tone shirt dress gave a modern twist to this trend at Stella McCartney, while an off-the-shoulder striped top at J.Crew was as fresh as a sea breeze.
