I have a not-so-secret love affair with the local jewellery collection Amor. Designer Amor Carandang is somewhat of a Mixmaster, combining copper, gold and sterling silver, often all in one piece. She’ll also throw in little charms—a key here, a heart there—for added funk on necklaces, earrings and bracelets (from $20). Money new location
One of Oil Country’s beloved boutiques, Nokomis (10318 82nd Ave., Edmonton, 780-432-7462, nokomisclothing.ca) has moved into a former bank. The building, built in 1908, is nothing short of grand, with its high ceilings, large windows and lovely old radiators. There’s also more space for clothing and for photos of…grandmothers? Nokomis means “grandma” in Ojibwa, and customers are encouraged to bring in a photo of their babcia, which is how we say grandma at my house—in Polish.
Chic shop alert | Sabrina Butterfly
After years spent flying between festivals and shops across Alberta, Edmonton’s Sabrina Butterfly has landed. Her eponymous boutique (6421 112th Ave., Suite 102, Edmonton, 780-482-6460, sabrinabutterflydesigns.ca), in the up-and-coming Highlands area, is a cozy space where her colourful, patterned signature tops and flowing skirts are right at home. New for spring are halter dresses, and short swing jackets with ¾-length sleeves in quilted, textured heirloom fabrics.
