What Was Lost (Anchor Canada, $22) By Catherine O'Flynn
What starts out as a playful friendship between Kate Meaney, a budding Nancy Drew, and Adrian, the 22-year-old son of a local shopkeeper, quickly turns tragic when the young girl disappears and Adrian is the target of mounting accusations. Flash forward twenty years and an image of the 10-year-old Kate appears on the security cameras at Green Oaks, the shopping centre she so vigilantly watched. Her memory haunts two mall employees, each with a connection to the mystery, as they try to sort out their listless lives and come to grips with long-buried memories.
