Dance class revolution

So you think you can tone? Dance is the hottest new way to work it out. We check out the top classes across Canada.

By Lisa Reddy

MONTREAL

Hip Hop, $15, Studio Sweatshop, 24 Mont-Royal Ave. W., Suite 704, 514-287-9090, studiosweatshop.com. Wannabe video vixens need not apply here, where the weekly-changing choreography is “less about the booty shake and more about good, intense movement,” says studio owner JoDee Allen.

Kitten Heels, $14, Shauna Roberts Dance Center, 372 Ste-Catherine St. W., Suite 328, 514-529-5002. “Ultrafeminine, seductive and very strong” is how instructor Robin Henderson describes her jazz-based, Pussycat Dolls–style class, in which students strut, pop and lock to a toned core and physique.

TORONTO

Socacize, $16, Aurora Live Inc., 392 Queen St. E., 416-728-5545, socacize.com. A combination of intense cardio, strength training and lots of butt-shaking means you’ll burn calories fast in this high-energy Caribbean- and African-style session.

The Extension Method, $15, Lawrence Park Chiropractic and Physiotherapy, 2739 Yonge St., 416-995-7041, extensionmethod.com. Jennifer Nichols has stripped ballet of its prissy leotards and severe buns, combining movements from the classical discipline with free weights, cardio and mat exercises to sculpt your body.

CALGARY

Reggaeton Aerobics, $15, Latin Corner Dance Studio, 163-200 Barclay Parade SW, 403-262-3282, latincorner.ca. A blend of merengue, hip-hop, calypso and grinding, this popular class gives you rhythm, dance-hall technique and a full-body cardio workout, so you’ll be muy caliente in no time.

VANCOUVER

Hoop Dance Fusion, $75 for six classes, Drive Dance Centre, 1839 Commercial Dr., 604-762-4232, drivedancecentre.com. You may have mastered the hula hoop in middle school, but instructor Laura Gordon makes this a head-to-toe workout, incorporating arms, shoulders, hands and legs, along with jazz and bellydance moves.

Cardio Salsa, $12, iDance, 302 West 2nd Ave., 2nd floor, 604-512-4622, idancestudios.com. Salsa, samba, mambo and cha-cha-cha your way through this upbeat class, in which fast footwork, catchy tunes and a relaxed vibe make you feel like you’re sweating it out on a Caribbean-bound cruise ship.

Alexandra: I understand the Globe and Mail's Amy Verner has embarked on a new column where she evaluates the latest fitness class trends. Since the G&M is a national paper, it's likely Edmonton will be listed.
