This Is Why Women Regret One-Night Stands More Than Men
If you’ve ever felt like you regretted a one-night stand more than the guy you had it with did, well, you’re probably right.
According to a recent Norwegian University of Science and Technology study, women are more likely to feel remorse the morning after, whereas men are more prone to regretting passing up on casual sex.
The reason? Evolution.
“Women and men differ fundamentally in their sexual psychology,” Dr. Buss, one of the co-authors of the study, told The Telegraph. “A key limitation on men’s reproductive success, historically, has been sexual access to fertile women. These evolutionary selection pressures have created a male sexual mind that is attentive to sexual opportunities.”
In other words, since most fertile men can father as many children as they’d like to—only limited by the number of available fertile women—the quantity of potential mates is what reigns supreme to improve his reproductive success.
Women, on the other hand, focus more on the quality of their mates to ensure the best genes are carried forward and that their mate will invest time in them and their children.
This Norwegian study was conducted in response to a previous U.S. study to see if women in a sexually liberal and egalitarian country like Norway also experienced one-night-stand regret. The research team recruited 263 male and female students aged 19 to 37, all of whom experienced a one-night stand at least once, and found the same pattern in Norway as in the U.S., with roughly 35 per cent of women and 20 per cent of men regretting their experience to some degree.
It also found that women were more likely to feel unhappy about the experience, with 30 per cent of women reporting they were happy with their most recent casual sex encounter, compared to over 50 per cent of men saying the same.
And when it comes to turning down casual sex, almost 80 per cent of women were happy they said no in comparison to 43 per cent of men.
