The fashionable way to reduce, reuse, recycle: Introducing H&M’s new garment collecting initiative
With every solid closet clean out, when the never-worn clothing gets separated from the over-worn, there’s always the question of what to do with pieces after they have been pulled off the hangers and out of the drawers. Donate, throw away or give to friends?
Now, H&M is offering the solution to this on-going problem and providing shoppers with the opportunity to return used clothing in any state—tattered, barely worn, and from any brand—to select stores so they can be reused, recycled, or donated to be re-worn.
H&M is the first fashion company to offer a garment collecting initiative in attempt to reduce textile waste, which is harmful to the environment. Every year textiles end up in landfills when in reality up to 95 per cent could be recycled and reused (that’s a high percentage!). For every bag of used clothing that is returned to select locations, you’ll receive a $5 voucher off your next purchase of $30 or more. The collected clothing will be handled by H&M’s partner for this initiative, I:Collect, which is in charge of processing the textiles so they can be reused.
We could call this one of H&M’s New Year resolutions because the program kicks off in February 2013, just in time for the pre-spring closet clean out.
