How to Wear Metallics During the Day (and Not Look Like a Disco Ball)

Runways and red carpets have already proved that metallics are not just for the holiday season. Still, walking around in the daytime in a shimmery piece can be daunting. (Who wants to look like a disco ball?) While looking to Michael Kors, Dolce & Gabbana and Lanvin’s Fall 2016 collections are good places to get your sartorial juices flowing, they are not exactly everyday wear. Cue Style Panel. This week, we tapped our style experts on how to wear the metallic trend during the day. From gold blazers to silver skirts, scroll down to see 9 different ways to incorporate a little dazzle into your day.

Question 168: How do you wear metallics for day time?

We’re seeing a lot of metallics recently, but it’s hard to think of ways to incorporate the trend during the day without feeling over the top. The way I wear metallics on a day-to-day basis is by wearing these metallic flats from Asos. They’re stunning and can easily upgrade any outfit. The sparkles on the back also make it fun and not feel like your typical ballet flats.

The blazer is one of my go-to pieces – I possess it in every possible colour and shape. This silver metallic one is a favourite to wear for all occasions. During the day, I love to wear it with a little slip dress and a pair of Adidas Stan Smith sneakers. I always manage to dress down a nighttime piece with a pair of sneakers, because it makes the look more comfortable and fun to wear!

If you want a bold statement in your outfit, metallic is the way to go. Metallics are more often associated with a fancy, nighttime look, but you can make it into a casual day look as well. Since metallics are such an attention grabber, I would tone it down with black, white or other neutral shades and with the ultimate casual staple, a pair of sneakers. I think the key in making it more day-appropriate is keeping it modern, simplified and comfortable.

I love that we’re currently in a fashion climate where anything goes; vintage, velvet, minimalist, maximalist – and metallics are no different. No longer relegated to eveningwear, it’s totally acceptable (and encouraged, in my opinion!) to sport the sparkly stuff during the day.

My favourite way to wear metallics for day is pairing it down with some distressed denim and a graphic tee so it doesn’t feel too fancy. I’m also a big fan of mixing and matching metallics – this jacket has a subtle sheen and picks up the silver in my brogues. I think if you’re going to wear metallics, you might as well have some fun with it!

I recently wore this silver slip dress for a daytime stroll on the streets of Boston. I knew I wouldn’t be going back to my hotel room before dinner, so I paired my metallic dress with strappy flats. Pairing the flashy dress with simple flats balanced out my outfit for a casual daytime look.

In my opinion, metallic colours are a trendy and fun way to give your daywear an interesting twist. I also love how it can spice up any casual look.

There is one rule – if you’re going to pick one standout piece, keep everything else simple. I toned down these metallic culottes with a stripe knit top, flat fur mules and a denim cross-body bag.

Whenever I’m looking to add a pop of color or texture into my daytime outfit, my go-to is a metallic piece. My favourite way to incorporate the metallic trend into an outfit is with a pair of shoes. It’s the easiest addition to a wardrobe when you don’t want to make a huge investment. You can find the dazzling texture in any retailer like H&M or Zara easily for under $60! The best part is that you can get away with wearing metallics all year round.

There are many design elements that I’ve studied that can be applied to various aspects of styling clothing. My favourite two that I play with the most are uniformity and contrast as they are great tactics to creating dynamic outfits.

In this case, I’ve mixed and matched two awesome suits, a gold business suit and a rose tracksuit, to create contrast. By pairing a metallic piece with a sweatshirt, you tone down the fancy and athletic elements of both pieces and create a casual outfit that can take you from day to night.

This silver accordion pleated skirt has been one of my favourite fall pieces in my wardrobe so far. It’s a statement piece that gets a lot of compliments. For my daytime look, I paired the skirt with a black high-neck top, rose gold sunglasses and black pointed-toe flats.
