Spring 2017 Trend Report: How to Wear Statement Sleeves Like a Boss

Statement sleeves have fluttered onto the style scene in a big way. Just ask Kourtney Kardashian, who recently posted a photo on Instagram wearing a 50s-inspired cropped top with ruched sleeves. “Road TRIPPIN,” read the caption. The 37-year-old reality star looked like a throwback Hollywood starlet, posing with sisters Kim and Khloé.

Olivia Palermo recently wore a striped off-the-shoulder top with beautiful voluminous sleeves. Paired with faded, distressed denim, the look says next gen romance.

Now that you know statement sleeves are the coolest new way to up your style game, it’s time to grab a little inspo from the spring 2017 runways. If everyday basics are your jam, look to Jacquemus for an updated take on the classic white button-down. Hint: it’s all about ruching. At Kenzo, the space-age candy foil fabric teamed with jagged sleeves created a futuristic Star Trek vibe. Mugler went space age, too, with super structured (almost stiff) rounded sleeves. The 80s were on repeat at Saint Laurent, and a micro mini black leather dress (the BLD the new LBD) with pointed sleeves took the spotlight. Marc Jacobs went old school, like really old school, with his Edwardian-inspired balloon sleeves that deflated at the elbow, and hugged the forearm down to the wrist.

Bold ruffled sleeves added dramatic flair to Delpozo’s hot pink minimalist topper, while a sweeping muted pink dress at Prabal Gurung featured sleeves that billowed out from the elbow like pleated waterfalls. Colour continued its reign at Marni, where a mint green accordion-pleated look with slouchy, elongated sleeves held court. There were plenty of cut-outs, too—Giambattista Valli’s diaphanous floral print dress included large shoulder cut-outs and puffy sleeves that looked like they were filled with air.

Check out our favourite statement sleeves from the spring 2017 runways below. Whether bell-shaped or balloon, these OTT accents bring new meaning to the term arm candy.
