The greatest styling tip I’ve ever learned was to dress in outfits that make you feel like yourself. If you aren’t comfortable in what you’re wearing, the rest of the world can see it as you walk by. The most beautiful outfits are the ones where your personality shines through. I like wearing hats and polka dots because they bring out the playful side to my personality. When getting dressed in the morning, ask yourself “Is it me?” “Do I feel confident in this outfit?” “Does this match the weather forecast?”

If you’re dressing for somebody else or a different season, you’re bound to feel awkward. Let yourself dress in clothes that make you feel happy to be you. Another fun styling tip I’ve learned is to match your belt with your shoes. This will help to bring your entire outfit together.

The temperature is rising day by day, and all I want to do is stay cool by the beach. That’s why I love the smart-styling of turning swimwear into everyday dressing. Who wouldn’t say no to this styling tip if it will allow them to hit the beach and a bar later on without an outfit dilemma? My recent favourite way of taking beachwear to the streets is having a full-length skirt thrown over a one-piece swimsuit. Trust me, nothing is easier than this.

“Hats and shoes are the bookends of an outfit. As long as they go together everything in between will work.”

This clever style tip came from my Mom who worked in the shoe department at Eaton’s during university. It’s one of those concepts that seems so obvious once you hear it, yet you’d never thought of it before. Now I use this trick all the time. In the summer I pair natural materials like straw hats with wooden clogs and during cooler seasons I pair wool hats with leather boots in the same colour range and it never fails to do the trick! It’s the perfect way to round out a look without feeling too matchy-matchy.

Kayla Short, 26
Halifax | Short Presents

As a “What Not To Wear” junkie I feel like I’ve learned a wealth of style advice from Stacey and Clinton, but one that sticks out to me, time and time again is to keep volume in one area, and pull in the rest. I’m not going to lie, I love a great tulle skirt. I mean, who doesn’t want to channel their inner ballerina without the pain of point shoes? Sign me UP! A lot of times, though, girls comment on my tulle skirt photos saying “I wish I could pull that off.” Well I’m here to tell you that you can! The trick is to wear something more fitted on the top, so the skirt is the focus (don’t try and compete with it).
