Anna Wintour spoke at the Pratt Institute last night in a tribute to Irving Penn, and we got a glimpse into the softer side of the Vogue editor-in-chief, calling Penn a “seductive” man who she immediately had “an intellectual crush [on].”  She concluded her speech quite emotionally, saying “He made me a better editor. He was always in my head…. Irving’s gifts to us will not end.” [Fashionista]

The bankrupt brand Rock & Republic also has some extra baggage to deal with, as founder Michael Ball has gotten himself tangled up in a love triangle. Read slowly to follow this mess: Fernanda Romero, a model for the brand, married pizza deliveryman and musician Kent Ross, allegedly for U.S. residency. Ball reportedly helped arrange the union. First however, Romero dumped fashion photographer Markus Klinko for her pizza guy. Klinko was none too happy and revealed the scheme to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency in jealous revenge. So where does this leave Ball? The case is moving forward and his involvement is being investigated. [The Cut]

Vera Wang+David’s Bridal=a budgeting bride’s dream come true. For those brides-to-be that appreciate Wang’s work but find the price tags a bit pesky, the collaboration brings dresses that top out at $1,500. It launches in the U.S. for Spring 2011. [Stylecaster]

The volcanic ash cloud has scuppered travel plans for some of fashion’s elite players: Ralph Lauren is stuck in Paris, Giles Deacon endured a 21-hour journey from Milan to London, Net-a-Porter shipments are delayed, and Giorgio Armani, who has already postponed the launch of his first hotel in Dubai three times (for unrelated reasons), has again had to push back the event. To celebrate their new “High Style” exhibition, The Brooklyn Museum has tapped Opening Ceremony co-owners Humberto Leon and Carol Lim to create a carnival. The duo have brought in six labels—Band of Outsiders, Philip Crangi, Patrick Ervell, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Rodarte and Slow and Steady Wins the Race—to make individual carnival games like the classic ring-toss and tarot card reading.
