Opulence, luxury and aristocracy ruled amongst designers and street style stars who have become the style inspiration of many, thanks to their rich party girl-personas and limitless fashion budgets. These street girls also don’t dress for one occasion, and designers have caught on to this state of mind.
Gone are the days where you could pull out a single theme or trend in a collection, then highlight the common thread amongst a handful of designers. Today’s inspiration comes from many sources, including eras, people and places, and thus several ideas and references are merged into one collection. It’s a new philosophy that has the fashion world headed in every direction. The industry is experiencing a shift, and this new ideology seems to align with our craving for individualism and diversity. Could it be that designers have fallen in love again with Gucci the way the rest of us have? This season, Alessandro Michele’s aesthetic (particularly last Spring’s Gucci collection) has appeared on the runways during MFW. The eclectic rich street girl has popped up again and again in various ways. It’s like the fashion world has been hypnotized by the Gucci effect, yet no one is looking for a way to alter this new state of mind. Clearly, this girl is everybody’s muse come fall.
Once the choice fabric of the wealthiest and most noble, brocade is back on the radar for fall at Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Blumarine and Gucci. Velvet and fur are also used in big ways, either in mixed forms or as trim details, especially on footwear. Silhouettes are elongated, precise and architectural. It is a season of historical references reimagined with a love of luxury and divine decadence.
The runways are so diversified now that the new trend is the absence of trends. It is the continuation (or maybe just a new era) of multiple influences. From Renaissance to military, Studio 54 to the 80s & 90s, the Fall 2016 collections are a mash-up of inspirations and styles.
The Milanese are having a love affair with the 80s for Fall 2016. From punk rock to Pretty in Pink, the mix of rebellious charm ranged from subtle to significant. Combat boots were in countless collections, including Fausto Puglisi, Giamba, MSGM and Dolce & Gabbana. There were also leather caps at Moschino, stirrup pants (no kidding) at Versace and Marni, and a sequinned AC/DC dress at Gucci. Molly Ringwald and Madonna (in her ‘Like a Virgin’ phase) would approve.
The Fall 2016 runways have been unexpectedly splashed with colour in a season that normally commands a more somber palette. Almost every collection in Milan boasted unique colour combos and bright punchy prints. The most notable (and our personal fave) was Gucci, where there was little to no solid black. Marco de Vincenzo, Missoni, Pucci and Blumarine were also dominated by colour.
