This season marked Mikael Derderian‘s biggest collection yet, and with it, the exciting news of the designer officially launching into the bridal market. The Montreal-based designer has already dressed the likes of Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and Miranda Lambert and pulled out all the stops for Spring 2016 with over the top voluminous dresses, sexy cutaways and hand embroidery and beading, closing out world MasterCard Fashion Week.

Inspiration
This season’s collection was called “Forbidden Paradise,” which translated into soft colours, delicate beading and floral applique with plunging necklines, lace on skin and revealing silhouettes.

Set
Models emerged through a white lotus looking structure made from paper petals reaching as high as 14 feet.

Wow Factor
The numbers speak louder than words when describing the production of Mikael D’s dresses. The team worked in groups doing 90% of the construction by hand taking 1,000 to 5,000 hours to complete putting together what can be as much as 180,000 pieces of stones and material together.

Fabrication and construction
The collection used a new technique to fuse lace on to stiffer fabrics or a more architectural voluminous effect. Sheer lace leggings were topped with crisp lace high-low hemlines.

Thing we could have lived without
While Beyonce rocked the Storm look this past weekend at Ciara’s birthday party, the silver wigs were distracting on the models walking the runway at the Mikael D show. The silver strands took away from the polish of the carefully crafted larger than life dresses.
