Excitement is surely built right into the fashion world.

So, what’s new?

Someone asked me recently how I stay interested in fashion. For a moment, I thought I’d misunderstood the question. Stay interested in fashion? How could I not be? Obviously, someone in my job is biased. But even for someone less obsessed than a fashion magazine editor, excitement is surely built right into the fashion world.

The constant change in the industry—the latest runway collections, the new hot models, the emerging labels, the power shift from Paris to London, or the new shape in trousers, for that matter—means that what we talk about when we say “fashion” isn’t even the same thing every six months.

While we’re always on the lookout for what’s next in the world of style, our March trend issue is a particularly juicy chance for us to dive into what’s changing. And this is a fashion season that’s full to busting with ideas. The strength of the fast-fashion market and the brilliant, if now ubiquitous, collaborations between top international designers and mass-market brands have pushed designers to amazing heights of technique and creativity.

The Balenciaga collection by beautiful genius Nicolas Ghesquière was the perfect marriage of inspiration and technology—notions of nature, artifice and cultural authenticity all sewn up in curvy silhouettes of silk-bonded foam (which bore a striking resemblance to neoprene). So clever. So pretty. We could talk for days just about those gorgeous frocks! Check them out, along with the rest of our news from the spring runways, on page 52. Beauty junkies can get their fill of spring trends, too, in our beautiful runway hair and makeup report (page 90).

But no fashion obsession is complete without something new in your closet. Let’s face it, not every idea/dress that comes down the runway is ready for prime time. This month’s shopping section (page 169) is jammed with the key pieces you’ll be adding to your wardrobe for spring.

As I write this, the FASHION team is gearing up to attend the fall collections in New York, London, Milan and Paris (check out their blog here). I can’t wait to see what’s next. Send me a note at letters@fashionmagazine.com, and tell me what you’re excited about for spring. I love to get your letters.
