When I was in university I did an exchange that took me to Umeå, Sweden for six months. Obviously if I wasn’t curious about travel and the world in general, I’d never have gone there in the first place. But Sweden is also where I found the most unusual and otherworldly travel destination ever. My friend told me about a mossy hut atop a mountain in the north of the country. It had a little stove in it and benches, and that was about it. What made this place even more interesting is that it was there for anyone to use. You couldn’t book or rent it. We spent two days there before continuing on to The Lofoten Islands in Norway.
At home in our day-to-day, it can seem like the most incredible and rustic and unusual travel experiences only happen overseas. But that shouldn’t be the case because we live in a big place, with incredible and unique landscapes. So we did our own search for unusual Canadian places to stay and found that whether it’s a room shaped like a sphere that hangs in a rainforest or tents that overlook a mountainside, there really is no place like home.
Here, we present 10 of the most otherworldly getaways right here in Canada.
