The Hills Style Moments We’ll Never Forget (the Good, the Bad and the Really Bad)

We laughed with them, we cried with them, and whether or not you’d like to admit it, we definitely took fashion cues from them. Back in 2004, MTV’s Laguna Beach provided the world with an unprecedented look into on the lives of SoCal’s young and privileged teens (a.k.a. Lauren Conrad and friends). Roughly two years later, The Hills premiered, chronicling Lauren’s life as a young adult, alongside her crew: Audrina Patridge, Heidi Montag, Lo Bosworth, Whitney Port, etc.
This was a time before Instagram, Snapchat and smartphones existed, so it was a pretty big deal, TBH. Where else were you able to catch a glimpse of the Teen Vogue closet or what really went down on set during a photo shoot? Of course, many of the events that transpired weren’t entirely realistic (who sends a staff member on a red-eye from L.A. to Manhattan to personally deliver a gown to their boss?!), but it was definitely entertaining. And then there was the style. Bejewelled spaghetti tops via Fred Segal and Kitson, distressed denim capris, braided belts during the height of the boho-chic movement, and oversized EVERYTHING. Handbags, headbands, sunglasses—you name it. Basically the dream in 2006.
That said (and since we love a good throwback) we’re taking a look at the most epic style moments in The Hills, from amazing to WTF?!
Welcome to the Hills, where distressed denim capris are considered high fashion.
The ultimate SoCal 2006 starter pack: Bejewelled spaghetti top, denim mini-skirt, a fleece hoodie (preferably Abercrombie & Fitch or Hollister) and a Louis Vuitton Speedy.
Whitney Port’s idea of boho chic: A wide leather belt paired with a ruffled white dress.
Killing it in that fedora, Lo.
Massive headbands were a thing…
…and you got brownie points if you paired yours with a side pony. Extra kudos if you lined your lids (top and bottom) with a smudgy kohl pencil.
Wayfarers, what? If you didn’t own a pair of Carrera aviators or jumbo Dior movie star shades you were literally a nobody.
Lauren takes on NYFW (as in, she travels to the Big Apple to hand-deliver an outfit to her boss) in this chunky, beaded necklace that is so Marni-meets-Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2005.
Whitney does autumn-chic in a knit beanie with flower appliqués. Pretty sure she wore something similar on The City, much to Olivia Palermo’s dismay.
Pearls elevated any outfit.
Lauren definitely loved capris. Here, she paired hers with heels for a day on set (rookie mistake, LC).
Stick-straight strands and a T-mobile Sidekick? Yes!
That time Lauren rocked the half bun before some person in 2015 made it “cool.”
“Star intern” Emily Weiss (of Into the Gloss/Glossier fame) brought her chic NY presence to the show but was mostly remembered for her tremendous knowledge of flowers and table arrangements.
Lauren’s go-to power outfit: a shrug and lingerie-inspired tank top.
Lauren sets flower arrangements in a smocked trapeze dress. Pretty sure she was wearing leggings underneath, because that was such a “Lauren” thing to do. Lastly, notice that overly long necklace.
The legging + tunic combo returns! FYI, she definitely pioneered this look.

Heidi does going-out tops like no other.
Talk about a style evolution. At this point Whitney and Lauren are now working at People’s Revolution alongside Kelly Cutrone. Here they are, giving us major House of Holland/Marc by Marc Jacobs vibes. So 2007.
