A Definitive Timeline of Shawn Mendes and Charlie Puth’s Bromance

Consider us Sharlie shippers.

Aside from friendships between strong, badass women, there’s nothing we love more than a good bromance, especially in Hollywood. After all, in an industry that is ultra competitive, it’s nice to see a couple of bros embarking in a good old friendship.

And while George Clooney and Brad Pitt, Andy Samberg and Justin Timberlake, and Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are all iconic celebrity bromances, there’s a new bromantic friendship brewing that is worth getting excited over: Shawn Mendes and Charlie Puth.

Puth will be accompanying Mendes on the North American leg of his Illuminate world tour this summer, and while many people think this very tour will be the start of a beautiful bromance, we true Mendes/Puth fans know the singers were already vibing before the the tour announcement (which, by the way, was totally cute in itself).

Behold, our unofficial definitive timeline of Shawn and Charlie (Sharlie?)’s epic bromance:

December 1, 2015: Shawn sends a tweet to Charlie.

This is (where we think) it all publicly began: Shawn sends out a tweet to Charlie saying, “blown away with you man. You rock. So pumped to tour with u.” The tour he speaks of? The iHeartRadio Jingle Ball 2015 tour, which (fun fact!) also included Selena Gomez (it was during this tour Charlie and Selena previewed their “We Don’t Talk Anymore” single, but we digress…).

December 2, 2015: Charlie and Shawn cover Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” with (former) Fifth Harmony member, Camila Cabello.

So this was around the time Shawn and Camila Cabello were rumoured to be dating, especially since they had just released their joint single, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (a.k.a. “IKWYDLS”). During the Jingle Ball tour, Camila, who was participating with then band Fifth Harmony, joined Shawn and Charlie backstage to randomly cover Justin Bieber’s “Sorry.” Or you know, maybe Charlie joined Shawn and Camila, depending on how you look at it.

December 16, 2015: Mendes and Puth are spotted hanging out in Chicago during the Jingle Ball Tour.

The pair were spotted by fans in Chicago while they were in the city for the Jingle Ball Tour. The boys obvi posed for pics with fans, though not at the same time. Why is this important, you may ask? Because these are some of the very few photos of the duo together (we’re sure that’ll change soon, though!).

December 18, 2015: Charlie shares a gym mirror selfie of himself and Shawn on Instagram.

You may think Shawn and Charlie bonded over music (and hey, maybe they did), but these two are also seriously into working out—sometimes together. In December 2015, Puth shared an adorable gym selfie of him and his bro on Instagram, but unfortunately, due to his recent “rebranding” (he got rid of several of his Instagram pics, ICYMI), the pic got deleted. Luckily, fan accounts (BLESS THEM ALL!) managed to capture the moment before it was gone so we could all enjoy it forever.

December 18, 2015: Charlie Snapchats himself and Shawn.

On that very same day, Charlie also posted a Snapchat of himself and Shawn enjoying what appears to be some post-workout smoothies. Yum.

December 19, 2015: Charlie makes an appearance on Shawn’s Snapchat.

After receiving all of the love from Charlie via Snapchat, it was only fair for Shawn to do the same for his bro. Here, we see him playfully poking fun at Charlie.

February 2016: Charlie does a Shawn Mendes impression for Teen Vogue.

Teen Vogue asks Charlie to do his best impression of someone, and of course he chooses Shawn. “Shawn, I’m sorry about this but… ‘Hey, Buddy. It’s Shawn Mendes here.'” We’re giving this one to Charlie since he nails Shawn’s voice and smile down to a tee. “He’s Canadian! He says ‘buddy’ a lot!” Charlie laughs. Skip to the 1:35 mark.

November 2016: Charlie says he can’t wait to work out with Shawn again.

“I can’t wait to work out with Shawn Mendes again. I mean, every day we were hittin’ the gym and playing shows,” Charlie told Z100 in an interview.

December 2016: Charlie comments during Shawn Mendes’ Instagram Live video.

During Shawn’s Instagram livestream, Charlie showed support for his friend, with nine red hearts and an “OH EM GEE THE FEELS SHAWN.” Sharlie shippers everywhere go wild.

February 20, 2017: Charlie comments on Shawn’s Instagram photo.

Once again, Charlie was there to support his bro, this time by simply commenting “:)”.

February 20, 2017: Shawn refers to Charlie as “my guy!”

When Charlie responds “I prefer a wholesome muffin.” to a fan who asks him “pancakes or waffles, help” Shawn quotes the tweet, adding “Thats my guy! Hahah.”

February 22, 2017: Shawn announces Charlie will be joining him during the North American leg of his Illuminate tour.

March 17, 2017: Charlie posts a photo of himself working out and tags Shawn.

He’s workin’ on his fitness, yo, and you better believe he’s showing his bruh, bruh.

April 20, 2017: Shawn makes it known that Charlie sends him gym selfies.

Shawn calls in to the Elvis Duran and Morning Show show to chat about his new single, “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back.” Duran then asks Shawn if he has a message for Charlie Puth, who’s slated to be on the show the next day.

“Charlie, keep going to the gym,” Shawn says.

Adorable, right? Here’s where it gets amazing though:

“He actually sent me a picture of himself the other day…” Shawn starts…and a long pause ensues. “That sounded really bad!”

The hosts laugh, and Shawn clarifies that it was a gym selfie.

“Charlie, I’m pumped to see you. And I’ll see you in a couple of months, and if you stop working out, I’ll kill you.”

April 20, 2017: Charlie confirms that he, indeed, does send Shawn gym pics.

Charlie drops by 102.7KIIS FM to chat about HIS new single “Attention,” which so happened to drop the exact same day Shawn’s did. The *attention* is then placed on him and Shawn touring together.

“We’re in a bit of a work-out off a thon,” Charlie explains. “I sent this to Shawn,” he says while pulling out his phone. We are then shown a pic of Charlie and his jacked-up arms. “That was arm day.”

He also says that he’s exciting to be touring with Shawn because he has a “really healthy rider.” Important intel, people! Skip to the 8:33 mark.

April 21, 2017: Charlie responds to Shawn’s message.

Elvis Duran plays Charlie the message that Shawn Mendes sent a day prior.

“Well, that kid needs… oh my, God. He needs more media training or something!” Guys, stop!!!

“Well, Shawn Mendes, I will tell you that I am very swole as we speak right now, and I work out pretty much every day of the week,” he says. “Except for the Lord’s Day: Sunday.” Skip to the 4:27 mark.

April 21, 2017: Charlie reiterates that he is getting swole…but for Shawn.

K, let’s be honest: Shawn Mendes is a beast (or “buff extraordinaire,” according to Charlie)! And Charlie’s dedicated to getting on Shawn’s level.

“He would always make fun of me being like, ‘Charlie, why are you skipping the gym? Charlie, why are you getting room service? Charlie, why are you eating ice cream?’ I love ice cream, Shawn! Can I live?!” Charlie tells Ryan Seacrest.  “So now I’m on this no sugar diet or whatever, and I’m gonna be on tour with Shawn and it’s gonna be like, more a muscle-off than an actual show!”

All we can say is, that is one muscle-off we’d love to see.

May 29, 2017: Charlie professes his excitement for the Illuminate Tour

We’re a little over a month away from the North American leg of the Illuminate World Tour, and someone is especially excited about this. Charlie posts a screen shot of the Spotify Global Top 50 chart on his Instagram; his single “Attention” is ranked 7th and Shawn’s “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” is ranked 6th. (We weren’t kidding when we said this was a definitive timeline, people.) “hey @shawnmendes tour is going to be so much fun,” Charlie captioned the post.

But Charlie pointing out that their singles are side by side on the charts is hardly the best part. Shawn’s response is:

Savage, right? If this old-married-couple banter is making us grin like dorks right now, can you imagine what it’ll be like once the tour starts?! Guys, stop!!!

July 12, 2017: Shawn and Charlie pump each other up backstage while on tour.

July 25, 2017: Sharlie spend their day off at the beach.

Activities included burying themselves into the sand, and chasing each other into the water. BROMANCE, EVERYONE.
