The Official Trailer for Season 5 of Orange is the New Black is Here, and It’s Intense

The show returns on June 9.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Season 4 of Orange is the New Black finished on a dark and foreboding note last June: There was the accidental death of inmate Poussey Washington (played by Samira Wiley) at the hands of a prison guard, which resulted in a riot at Litchfield Penitentiary, and a major cliffhanger ending, with Daya (Dascha Polanco) holding a gun to a guard’s head.

Of course, this left fans begging to know what would happen in Season 5. Does Daya pull the trigger? According to Adrienne Moore, who plays Black Cindy, this season will explore the injustices surrounding sexism, the African-American community and their incarceration, and police brutality. “We are at the precipice of uncovering a lot of the ugliness in our society,” Moore told FASHION at Netflix’s summer press junket. “All of these things we’re exposing and we’re talking about on the show are causing people to wake up and listen, and react and do.”

In the official trailer we see the inmates uniting to protest the intolerance and abuse they experience at Litchfield. “We are taking these conversations and putting them out for people to really look at and talk about,” said Moore. “This female-driven show is doing that, so I think it’s empowering and powerful, and it’s giving me, and a lot of us, a huge sense of fearlessness to talk about the problems in our society.” All of your questions will soon be answered as Season 5 premieres on June 9 on Netflix.
