Is Selena Gomez’s New Song Really About Ex-Boyfriend Justin Bieber? We Break Down the Lyrics

From making a red carpet statement to sitting front row at NYFW to producing a sure-to-be Netflix hit, it’s clear that Selena Gomez is making a strong comeback. While the media and paparazzi want to keep the convo on her drama-filled love life going, the 24-year-old singer/actress is making sure the spotlight shines where she wants it: on her career. Today, it’s all about her latest new single with DJ Kygo.

Since February 10, the two artists have been teasing us with photos on Instagram (Kygo even did a countdown!), but thankfully, they didn’t make us wait too long. Last night, the Norwegian DJ/songwriter/producer dropped his latest EDM track titled “It Ain’t Me” featuring Gomez, and we’re listening to it on repeat.

It’s been almost a year since we’ve heard Gomez’s vocal skills, so naturally everyone is dissecting the lyrics—line by line. Given that there is a lot of interest in her personal life, everyone’s concluding that it’s got to be about her ex, Justin Bieber.

Here’s what we think the lyrics mean:

Verse 1:
I had a dream
We were sipping whisky neat (Remember when Bieber serenaded Gomez with “My Girl” at a hotel bar?)
Highest floor, The Bowery (OK, technically that event happened in L.A., but at least we know there is a chance they do drink whisky)
And I was high enough
Somewhere along the lines
We stopped seeing eye to eye (Read: on again/off again relationship)
You were staying out all night
And I had enough (Honestly, we’re surprised Gomez even put up with his bad boy act for so long)

Pre-Chorus 1:
No, I don’t wanna know where you been or where you’re going (Could this be about his extra flirty behaviour at the 2012 Victoria’s Secret Angel show?)
But I know I won’t be home
And you’ll be on your own

Chorus:
Who’s gonna walk you through the dark side of the morning?
Who’s gonna rock you when the sun won’t let you sleep?
Who’s waking up to drive you home when you’re drunk and all alone?
Who’s gonna walk you through the dark side of the morning?
It ain’t me

Drop:
It ain’t me
It ain’t me
It ain’t me

Verse 2:
I had a dream
We were back to seventeen (Selena and Justin were 17 when they were rumoured to be dating)
Summer nights and the liberties (Their St. Lucia trip, perhaps?)
Never growing up
I’ll take with me the polaroids and the memories (How can we forget those super cute black-and-white polaroids he posted on—and deleted from—Instagram)
But you know I’m gonna leave behind the worst of us

And the chorus picks up again.

So is this song about her former flame? We think so. But then again, the generic lines might not actually have anything to do with her love life and could pertain to anyone, maybe even Kygo himself. But we prefer the former. Listen to the full song below and you be the judge. Tweet and let us know on @FASHIONCanada.
