Alicia Vikander Looks Badass in These New Tomb Raider Pics

Earlier this year, we received the first glimpse of Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl) on set filming for the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot, and the pics looked pretty promising. Turns out we were right: The film’s official photos have been unveiled and Vikander as Lara Croft is sooooo badass.

Believe it or not it’s been over 15 years since Angelina Jolie starred as Croft in the Lara Croft: Tomb Raider franchise; the films are based on the popular ’90s video games.

We don’t have all of the details just yet, but what we do know is that the reboot will differ from the original Jolie series. For starters, the film focuses on Croft’s origin story—Vikander will be portraying a 21-year-old version of the famous female protagonist.

Also, gone are the days of the short shorts! Judging by the looks of it, Vikander’s Croft will be robed in more practical clothing (read: cargo pants with lots of pockets to actually store stuff in!)

“When I was asked to take on this role I got really excited—Lara Croft is a truly iconic character,” the 28-year-old Swede told Vanity Fair. “I think people can identify with her for lots of different reasons, but for me I very much see her as a model for many young women. She’s trying to carve out her place in the world and connect her future with her past. She also has a fantastic mix of traits—tough, smart, vulnerable, plus she’s kick ass! She is also uniquely different to other characters I have taken on previously. It’s a lot of fun trying to get into Lara’s head and the challenge of getting to grips with such a physical role is an element of this project that I find an absolute thrill.”

According to GQ, director Roar Uthaug has stated that the crew is currently wrapping up filming in South Africa, and will be heading to London, England for the next portion of filming. As of right now, the flick is slated to hit theatres on March 16, 2018, so we have a feeling that the first trailer will be dropping very soon. In the meantime, check out the photos and be sure to allot some time to a Tomb Raider re-watch—you have approximately a year to do so.
