3 Cocktails Inspired by This Year’s Biggest TIFF Films

Just about a week from today, the stars are going to start to descend on our fair city for TIFF, making Yorkville and the surrounding area suddenly a hotbed for potential celebrity sightings. During the festival, which lasts from the 8th to the 18th, The Thompson Toronto is serving up cocktails inspired by three of TIFF’s biggest films for some of their festival events including Entertainment Weekly‘s Must List Party and the Screen Actors Guild Event. So if you didn’t manage to score tickets to Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s premiere, you can cry into an alcohol-infused libation that pays homage to their movie instead. We know, we know, it’s small comfort. Read on for the recipes.

The 6ix shooter is the Thompson’s version of a boiler maker (a shot of whiskey with beer) and is inspired by the festival’s opening film The Magnificent Seven, a remake of the 60’s western starring Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke and Chris Pratt. Giddy up.

1.50 oz Peach Infused Bourbon (Woodford Reserve)
0.75 oz Ale (Goose Island IPA) Syrup
0.50 oz Peach Nectar
0.75 oz Lemon
2 Dashes Peychaud’s Bitters

Build, shake and fine strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with an orange zest.

Ryan Gosling Won’t Drink His Cocktail, which is a sendup of a YouTube video about the Gos and cereal, is inspired by the love story between Gosling and Emma Stone in La La Land, as well as the cinematography of this L.A.-set musical rom com.

1.00 oz Bombay Gin
0.75 oz Raspberry Rose Syrup
0.75 oz Lemon
Top with (1.5-2 oz) Champagne

Build (everything except champagne), shake and fine strain into a flute. Top with champagne, garnish with lemon zest.

What the Cool Kids are Drinking is inspired by TIFF’s closing night film, The Edge of Seventeen, a coming of age film starring Hailee Steinfeld. It’s an elevated version of what high school kids drink at house parties and obviously, must be chugged from a red plastic cup.

2.00 oz Grey Goose Vodka
1.00 oz ‘Can You Grab Some Mix On Your Way?’ Syrup
1.00 oz Lemon Juice
5-8 Mint Leaves
Soda

Build, shake and strain into a red ‘solo’ cup. Top up with soda, garnish with a mint sprig or a ping pong ball.
