Carla Bruni: Comme si de rien n’était (As If Nothing Happened) (Audiogram)
Ah, only the French could have a first lady who would release an album where she purrs about love, sex (lots of it) and drugs and have the public love her all the more for it.

The Polaris Prize shortlist nominees were announced this morning at the Drake Hotel by Polaris founder Steve Jordan. My shekels are on Plants and Animals for this cool Canadian prize.

Slimming Mirrors, Flattering Lights

The Awkward Stage: Slimming Mirrors, Flattering Lights (Mint Records)
No, I did not pick this album because of the title—though who would say no to slimming mirrors and flattering lights?—but because of the pretty indie pop turned out by The Awkward Stage (a.k.a. Vancouver multi-instrumentalist Shane Nelken and his band of merry men, which includes Tygh Runyan (The Beans) on lead guitar and Chris Mitchell (of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra) on trumpet).

Sally Shapiro: Remix Romance Vol. 2 (Paper Bag Records)
The world just can’t seem to get enough of this Swedish sweetheart. This is the second remix album out of Sally Shapiro’s 2007 debut Disco Romance (which we, like, covered and stuff before other people. Just sayin’).

Martha Wainwright: I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too (MapleMusic)
Yes, yes, she's Rufus's little sister, and while this gives a girl a lot to live up to at family sing-a-longs, when your parents are Loudon Wainwright III and Kat McGarrigle, music is simply in your genes (or in Martha's case, the tiny dress she wears while lounging on a groovy couch on the cover of her second solo album).

Gonzales: Soft Power (Arts & Crafts)
Okay, I admit it, it was the shimmering classic disco boogie sound of “Let’s Ride” that got me hooked on this album, but there’s a lot to love from Gonzales, the electro prankster showman/Grammy-nominated arranger/producer (ever heard of someone called Feist?)/multi-instrumentalist. What? You don’t play drums on Iggy Pop songs too? Whatsamatta’ you?

Gnarls Barkley: The Odd Couple
Warner
It was pretty much impossible to escape multi-instrumentalist Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton and vocalist Cee-Lo Green’s massive hit “Crazy,” from their 2006 debut, St. Elsewhere. Seemingly cheerful on the surface—hello party song!—it became weirder the more you listened to it and on their sophomore outing, the duo have definitely taken this darker side and run with it.

The Baroness: Sarah Slean
Warner
It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for, well, two types of music: Disco-infused, electronic pop and the genre I like to call “Sad Girls Singing”.

Parc Avenue by Plants and Animals
These Montreal lads have been causing quite a bit of indie tongue-wagging since they signed to Secret City Records, the home of Polaris Prize-winner Patrick Watson.

Made in the Dark

Made in the Dark by Hot Chip
The third full-length release from these hipster club favourites, Made in the Dark takes Hot Chip’s poppy electro stylez to a new quirky level. Expectations were high after the success of their eminently danceable Mercury Prize-nominated album The Warning and it s single “Over and Over,” and the boys don’t disappoint.
