Halifax: More closets, more dresses
Posted on September 30, 2008 by FASHIONReporters
Prêt à Port by Nadine LaRoche
A male roommate provides you with five key benefits: decor control, zero drama, towering entertainment systems, bathroom real estate and the bigger closet. For a clotheshorse like me, the latter is practically a godsend. When my roomie and I settled into our latest abode, the two closets in the far bedroom had my name all over them. However, a quick mental unpacking of all my garments had me at maximum capacity fast—too fast.

Zeitgeist! by Craig David Long
I call my FASHION Magazine blog Zeitgeist! with the intention of speaking to the spirit of the times. What I love about living in this day and age is that it is almost impossible to get dressed without juxtaposing different styles. Inspiration from eras long ago and cultures far and wide creep into our subconscious as readily as into our closets. The splendor of style spontaneity has made pastiche our prerogative. But nothing stirs the imagination quite like a hat, perhaps because it sits on the top of our head.

Fashion Royalty by Heather Loney
Sometimes there just aren’t enough stylish events happening in Guelph. But when a dry spell hits, a few dedicated fashion advocates step in to create some fashionable fun. This week marked the DVD release of the Sex and the City movie and with a screening at the Bookshelf Cinema downtown (41 Quebec Street, bookshelf.ca), there was no better time to throw a party. Though the movie debuted in theatres months ago, a group of fabulous folks jumped at the chance to celebrate, but this time with cosmos in hand.

Fashionable People by Amanda Bulman
If I was an 18-year-old designer bursting at the seams (no pun intended) with talent, I can’t promise I would be anywhere near as modest as the three girls who make up the design team of Sunsets on the Eastside. Katryna Crabbe, Kirsten Sweet and Jackie Skinner of Queens County, Prince Edward Island debuted their clothing line at P.E.I. Fashion Week in 2006 when they were barely 16 years old. Two years later, the girls have formed a small company and sell their cute wares both on Facebook and at the local vintage hipster haven, The Green Man Vintage and Vinyl (48 University Ave., 902-566-1361) .

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and as far as I’m concerned, the bigger the better. Located in the historic LeMarchand Mansion with a spectacular view of Edmonton’s River Valley, Kline Fine Jewellery & Design (11523-110 Ave., 780-482-6159, klinejewellery.com) is the address for exquisite sparklers that are sure to set your heart aflutter. The owner is former Edmonton Eskimo’s linebacker and six-time Grey Cup winner, Tom Towns.

Confessions of a Prairie Girl by Natasha Freysteinson
If you are trying to find premium denim, look no further: Caliber (155 – 2nd Ave. S., 306-664-9980) is one of the newest high-end fashion stores to hit the scene in Saskatoon. Located in the heart of downtown, quickly becoming one of the most popular areas for trendy boutiques and chic martini bars.

I Rock Fashion by Magali Ould
My favorite festival is finally heading our way! The ever expanding Pop Montréal (October 1-5, popmontreal.com) will strike again from this year, invading the streets, bars and churches with music, film, art and of course—our reason to live—fashion. Aside from the shows I can’t wait to attend, Puces Pop, the fashion branch of the festivities is presenting many events to prove once again that music and fashion don’t just have a fling, but a marriage.

For Fashion’s Sake by Sarah Blondin
One of my favorite areas of the city is the Exchange District. Cobblestone streets wrap around its old historic buildings and a park sits quietly in the middle of its busy intersections. And when the sun is setting, it paints everything a dusty pink. While the area isn’t known for its wild nightlife there is one night of the year when nothing closes, the streets fill with people and music and everything comes alive.

Prada in the Prairies by Bonnee McLachlan
If you're anything like me, finding the perfect jeans comes a close second to bathing suit shopping in fitting room anxiety. My routine goes like this: I turn around, check my assets and proceed to do squats and lunges. (Why I don't bring in a set of free weights is beyond me.) I know I'm not alone in this.

Odd Gems by Connie Ng
Venturing off to the Beach to bid farewell to summer, the highlights of this season finale exceeded the beach breezes and happy pedestrians as I contentedly returned home loaded with bling. Between ice cream and biking along the shore, I stumbled upon Ends (1930 Queen St. E., 416-699-2271, endsclothing.com), and my search for the perfect gold chain was finally at an end.

Prêt à Port by Nadine LaRoche
September has arrived and so has the dawn of the fashion weeks. For Haligonians, this typically means logging on and tuning in to top style sources for runway rundowns from this continent’s fast and fashionable cities.
But now, Halifax is adding to the mix with it’s own incarnation of fashion week—times two. It’s the war of the weeks here on the East Coast and two separate organizers have taken on the task of raising our fashion profile.

Zeitgeist! by Craig David Long
I don't think I could blog about fashion in Vancouver without mentioning the rain at least once, so let me just get it out of the way right now. Yes, it rains a lot here in Vancouver, and yes, it sometimes affects the way we dress. Unfortunately, practicality and fashion sense are often at odds with one another. But when you do find that perfect piece where form meets function, you know it's a must have.

Canada's most anticipated music event, the Virgin Festival took place on Toronto Island over the weekend. Against the backdrop of the city skyline and the scent of lake water was a sea of nodding heads, swaying arms and screaming fans leaping across blankets of mud and grass.

All you need is love, love. Love is all you need…
The Beatles may have put it best, but who wouldn’t want love wrapped around her pinkie? And seeing as I am a lover, what better way to make it known than spelling it out in gold on my little finger.

Fashion Royalty by Heather Loney
Named after the ancestors of King George the IV, the city of Guelph possesses a certain old-world flair, not just in its nomenclature, but in the posture of the downtown as well. Distinctly European street design—quaint or chaotic, depending on whom you are asking—necessitates a slower pace than the shopping malls of the suburbs. In the city’s core, the independent boutiques reign supreme, and the big-box stores have been held at bay for years. The sentence that typically follows “I like your outfit!” is “Where did you get that?” rather than “I have the same one in blue!” or “Isn’t Gap the best?”

Prêt à Port by Nadine LaRoche
If you don’t like the weather in Halifax, they say, wait half an hour. Same goes for fashion finds, it seems. After a fruitless shopping trip to one of my fave boutiques left me feeling boxy and deflated, my sluggish steps took me smack into my next splurge, right there on the sidewalk.

I Rock Fashion by Magali Ould
Oh, how I wish wearing a hat was still mandatory for women! (I’m all about showing ankles and more, though, don’t worry.) There’s just something so special about an outfit perfected with the final touch of a fabulous hat—to me, it’s classic elegance.

Clothes Minded by Dolly Magee
The shoe bootie, which I am affectionately calling the shootie, is the quintessential shoe of the season. I can’t wait to wear mine with a cardigan and pencil skirt à la Michael Kors. But the shootie is not just about secretary chic; it will also add a dose of punk to my fall wardrobe when worn with leggings and leather. What other shoe (or boot, for that matter) can claim to be quite so versatile? This gorgeous pair from Donald J Pliner ($525), found at Mayfair Shoes, is a well-stacked heel above the rest.

Zeitgeist! By Craig David Long
The inane rhetoric of Vancouver being a style straggler seems especially false in light of all the new shops popping up around town, notably along Vancouver’s new high street, Alberni. Home to Betsey Johnson (1033 Alberni St., 604-488-0314), Agent Provocateur (1020 Alberni St., 604-258-7943) and, my personal favourite, M0851 (1035 Alberni St., 604-688-9575), Alberni now offers us Blubird (1055 Alberni St., 604-257-0700, blubird.ca), a fresh new lifestyle boutique whose general manager, Sophia Koumbis, was part of the Boboli team for 15 years.

Prada in the Prairies by Bonnee McLachlan
As fall draws near, Calgarians tend to hold their breath, bracing themselves for a quick and abrupt end to summer. While savouring every last moment of warm weather can be disheartening to some, for others it means an opportunity to check out the latest in fall fashion. In autumn, the air is crisp and leaves are a riot of colours. For me, it’s a perfect recipe for handholding and a warm embrace.

Fashionable People by Amanda Bulman
I love vintage. It’s economical, environmentally friendly and the best way to find a unique piece to wear somewhere special. For me, the best thing about vintage shopping is digging for hours and leaving a store with an amazing find that will make my friends jealous. So when The Green Man Vintage and Vinyl (48 University Ave., 902-566-1361) opened its doors last fall, I was thrilled that the store was everything that vintage shopping is supposed to be—and more.

Confessions of a Prairie Girl by Natasha Freysteinson
It’s that time of the year again. I feel the need to go out and buy new crayons, sharpeners and markers, and make a fresh start. Although I don’t need all the new school supplies I once did, I still find justification to go out and buy a few new outfits and some little extras to go with them.
