Winnipeg: Cartier, uncovered
Posted on October 31, 2008 by FASHIONReporters
For Fashion’s Sake by Sarah Blondin
I’ve retired my usual tangle of bracelets for something a little more understated, something simple that fits just right on my little wrist: a vintage Cartier watch that I found in a pile of unmarked, unorganized jewellery at the Ruby Slipper Vintage Shoppe (970 Sargent Ave. 204-237-4976).

Prada in the Prairies by Bonnee McLachlan
There’s a time in every woman’s life when she contemplates her closet. Yesterday was my day. I graze my fingertips over each and every piece of clothing, discovering old gems and envisioning where and when I’ll wear it again. I can’t think of a better time to do this than when the weather is turning. Knowing that there’s someone in Calgary who could use an extra layer this winter, I take what’s fallen out of rotation and drop it off at a local women’s shelter.

Odd Gems by Connie Ng
The ROM has been upping its fashion cred lately. First was this month’s showing of one of Marie-Antoinette's original court gowns—part of the Out of the Vaults series—complemented by a screening of Sofia Coppola’s biopic, which juxtaposed pounding ’80s music with pale, ivory satin dresses with lavish embroidery, ribbons and bows.

Prêt à Port by Nadine LaRoche
Block one and the bleached glow from a gallery open long past closing time bleeds into the pedestrian stippled sidewalk. Block two and a set of storefront windows blink and wink with the darting movements of massive projections of the human eye. Around the corner, the local architecture school has opened its doors to a cardboard city with stations for Haligonians to pull out the scissors and add to a mini metropolis.

Zeitgeist! by Craig David Long
Two weeks ago, I left you in Richmond, amongst its best-kept secret, the Golden Village shopping district. If you ventured down to explore Yaohan and Aberdeen Centres yourself, then I am sure you’ve found in them enough shopping to fill your day. But you had better book yet another trip, because Parker Place mall (4380 No.3 Road, Richmond, 604-273-0276, parkerplace.com) certainly warrants a visit.

Fashion Royalty by Heather Loney
Guelph greenies have come a long way—and not just politically. A few years ago, it was surprisingly difficult to find clothing that was both environmentally conscious and, well, fashionable. But thankfully, that was no longer the case when Steve Johnson and Sara Chadsey opened the doors of Sole Earth Apparel (42 Wyndham St., North, 519-515-0194, soleearthapparel.com) this past April 2008. The two stock their shelves with pieces from over 30 different Canadian and American designers. The only imports in the store are pieces of fair trade jewellery or items found by Johnson and Chadsey while travelling.

Fashionable People by Amanda Bulman
I heart bikes. There is nothing cuter than a skinny boy on a brightly-coloured vintage framed bike with a basket. Lucky for me I live in flat, beautiful Prince Edward Island where hipsters in Ray-Bans practically live on their arty two wheelers year-round.

My love of accessories is so fierce I am willing to hold out on laser eye surgery in order to continue wearing gorgeous designer eyewear. Trust me when I say my collection surpasses even that of Sir Elton John. I especially adore my sunglasses, which have saved my life when I have either run out of or misplaced my YSL Touche Éclat.

Confessions of a Prairie Girl by Natasha Freysteinson
Winter is on the verge. The temperature is sliding and the sun no longer peers into my window to greet me in the morning. Saskatchewan winters can be pretty unpredictable and to stay fashionable during this time, when everyone should be hibernating, you need to plan ahead. Mukluks are the perfect way to stay stylish during the colder months (and a great alternative to Uggs).

I Rock Fashion by Magali Ould
Cold breeze blowing in from the ocean front (alright, alright river front), no parking to be found, girls tripping in the cracks of the old paved street with their high heels, and a hot red carpet inviting us to the Marché Bonsecours: Yep, we’ve made it to another Fashion Week!

For Fashion’s Sake by Sarah Blondin
A tailor is a girl’s best friend. I am the queen of thrift shopping and a believer that no girl’s closet is complete without some good ol’ used and abused pieces from the past.

Prada in the Prairies by Bonnee McLachlan
More often that not, jewellery tends to be an afterthought in my morning routine. I often push it aside, like brussell sprouts at a Thanksgiving dinner. Before I hit up dessert (in this case, a delicious pair of pumps), I quickly adorn myself with little thought or consideration. It recently occurred to me that I may have missed out on that whimsical fairy phase that most pre-pubescent girls go through. I have never considered diamonds to be my best friend. More like a great aunt, twice removed.

Odd Gems by Connie Ng
On October 4, Toronto hosted its third annual Nuit Blanche. Over a million people gathered for this all-night, after-dark adventure and discovered a city invaded by artists. Art of every medium, in every corner, illuminated the city with excitement, mystique and beauty. The event was an opportunity to seize a brief moment to connect with each other and our environment.

Prêt à Port by Nadine LaRoche
Friday night hits and fine art student Shakeel Rehemtulla is plunked down in front of his sketchbook, adding a page to what has become his T-shirt diary. The artist behind silkscreen company Woodenbullets, Shakeel has assigned himself the weekly task of conjuring up a design that puts the previous seven days to paper. The illustration turns into a small run of 30 to 50 shirts (from $25) that will hang from the racks at Halifax’s Farmers’ Market (1496 Lower Water St.) on Saturday morning.

Zeitgeist! by Craig David Long
If there is as much to be learned as is said from cultural diversity, then Vancouver is certainly the place to be. You'll often find in Vancouver that when you approach people to ask where they have acquired their outfit, the response is almost always Hong Kong, Korea or Japan. And having been fortunate enough to shop parts of Asia myself (in a quest to bring back its riches), I must attest that our neighbours to the east have a much better understanding of the ancient proverb “shop ’til you drop.”

When looking for the next greatest accessory, I often find myself flipping through magazines, drooling over the latest Italian or Parisian export. So it is such a treat when the item on your ‘it’ list happens to come from your own backyard.

Fashionable People by Amanda Bulman
Female vocalists like Emily Haines, Jenny Lewis, and Deborah Harry are always tops on the best dressed lists I keep in my head. So maybe it’s not surprising that the girls I would crown most fashionable on Prince Edward Island are also rising stars in the Maritime indie music scene.

Forget the “it” bag and the “it” shoe, fall’s hottest accessory is a bun in the oven. Not to be outdone by Angelina or Gwen, Edmonton’s fashion cognoscenti have Sweet Momma, a full service spa and boutique, (#109, 10903-23 rd Ave, (780) 432-2265, sweetmomma.com) to satisfy their stylish cravings.

Confessions of a Prairie Girl by Natasha Freysteinson
It’s no coincidence that Broadway is lined with independently owned boutiques, cafes, and specialty stores. Broadway was Saskatoon’s first commercial area and included such landmarks as the general store, dairy, post office, theatre and bank. It is an area rich in history and a sense of community, while promoting local businesses and a spirit of individuality.

I Rock Fashion by Magali Ould
Montreal Fashion Week is almost here. Taking over the Bonsecours Market in old Montreal (October 13 to 17, montrealfashionweek.ca), the 15th edition of the event is more daring than ever, presenting many young, hip up-and-coming designers as well as the classic, timeless warriors, such as Marie Saint-Pierre, Helmer and many others. Here’s what I’m excited about:

For Fashion’s Sake by Sarah Blondin
It doesn’t matter how many white T-shirts I own, I am always, and I emphasize always, looking for the perfect one. I have at least four on my shelves, all of which I have shared a brief romance with before moving on. When I finally think I’ve found one, I am reminded time and time again that nothing is ever perfect …until one day, I found it: the one, the only, perfect white tee.

Prada in the Prairies by Bonnee McLachlan
I like to think of myself as a bit of an urban hippie. Not the rainbow flip-flop, tree-hugging, non-shaving kind, just a woman who wants to be part of the environmental solution, not the problem. So, when I have an opportunity to make an affordable eco-chic purchase, I jump at the chance.

Odd Gems by Connie Ng
The thrill of hunting for one-of-a-kind gems is only part of the allure of vintage shopping. When we source style inspiration in reclaimed garments, our ecological footprint is reduced and as an eco-conscious country, many Canadians wear vintage pieces as if they were badges of honor. Stop any Toronto trendster on the street and ask what they are wearing, chances are they will snobbishly respond, “It’s vintage.” It’s most adorable!
