Beauty superdome

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m a little beauty product obsessed. My bathroom shelves are stacked with loads of makeup and hair care products, and I’m always on the lookout for a new line that’ll give me that extra glow. So when I was invited to take a tour of Garnier’s Take Care Dome (garnier.ca), a skincare, hair care and colour expert tent that teaches you how to “take care” of yourself, beauty wise, at the CNE (until September 1), I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my Friday morning.

Salon watch: Strictly Roots
Posted on August 12, 2008
By Amanda Dipasquale
Ruth Smith’s philosophy is simple: “Love yourself as you are.” Smith is the president and CEO of Strictly Roots Hair Salon (154 Bathurst Street, Toronto, 416-757-1024, strictlyroots.ca). The reasoning behind opening up her own salon stemmed from personal struggles with straightening her naturally kinky hair. Beyond the damage she was causing to her locks, a deeper reflection caused Smith to realize she was trying to live up to a specific standard of beauty.

Every girl knows that maintaining one’s lovely locks can be pricy. That sleek bob and perfect blowout definitely don’t come cheap. Thankfully, Redken (www.redken.ca) has come to the rescue, and all for a great cause. On Monday August 11, thirty of Canada’s top celebrity stylists will offer their professional services at Yonge-Dundas Square for the launch of Redken’s second annual Cut-A-Thon.

Luscious lift

Okay, so maybe I don’t have to worry about wrinkles yet, but there’s never any harm in making my skin as luscious and supple as possible. My face, especially, has to endure a lot during these hot sweaty summer months, when I forget to apply the SPF on marathon beach days or have late night patio outings.

Beneficial beauty

With a bevy of beauty brands jumping on the eco-sustainability bandwagon, it can be tough to tell lip service from the real deal, but The Body Shop’s Community Trade program actually lives up to its claim of social and environmental responsibility. The latest products in the two-decade old program, Flawless Skin Protecting Foundation SPF 25 ($23) and Concealer ($16, both at thebodyshop.ca) are infused with marula oil, a super-rich moisturizer made from nuts picked and processed by more than 4,800 women in Namibia.

Spa alert: Juva MedSpa
Posted on June 23, 2008
By Leah RumackThere is a new girl on the block in the medi-spa department, and she sure is pretty. The spacious and chic Juva MedSpa (91 Scollard St., 416-960-JUVA, juvamedspa.com) hits a sweet spot of medical facility-meets-boutique: It’s located on salon row on Scollard street in Yorkville and has medical cred (it's owned by Aurelia Chiru, a longtime cosmetic nurse, and is overseen by a G.P.).

Green eye opener

As much as I’ve heard that it isn’t wise to sleep with your makeup on, I’ll admit that after a late night of dancing or schmoozing, I am guilty of crashing head first into my pillow, smoky eyes and all. The downside to this, of course, is waking up the next morning to see a scary version of myself in the mirror.

The talented Mr. Steinberg

By Jada Skelly
I’ve been a huge fan of hair guru John Steinberg ever since I was a kid watching him do Fashion Friday makeovers on CityLine (ten points to anyone old enough to remember those days). So when I had the chance to sit down with Mr. Steinberg for a one-on-one to dish about his new book, Follicles! ($20, lulu.com), I was honouredthe Brit expat’s career spans five decades and his innovative cuts have won him devotees around the globe.

On the M.A.C tip
Posted on May 21, 2008
By Jada Skelly
Of all the endless brands of makeup that come across my desk, none manages to thrill me as much as M.A.C. Though I’ve used their products for well over a decade, I still salivate when I see the tiny tubes of shimmering paints and luscious bullets of vivid lipstick. My Pavlovian response was in full effect on a recent trip to the M.A.C Pro store (363 Queen Street West, 416-979-2171), where I met up with senior artist Melissa Gibson to talk tips and play with the latest summer shades.
