Statement lips and eyes: 5 Beauty Panel tips for pulling off both at the same time

Subtlety often takes centre stage in the beauty world. From a slight flick of eyeliner to a barely-there lip stain, and of course the ever-popular no-makeup look, it seems that less is usually more. However, sometimes we can’t help but apply an extra coat (or three) of mascara or a swipe of deep berry lipstick before we head out the door. From Kylie Jenner’s full lips to some flawless celeb cat eyes, we’ve been inspired by stars who aren’t afraid of a little glamour, and it seems we’re not alone. This week, we challenged our Beauty Panel to share their favourite ways to rock statement eyes and lips at the same time. They show us how to bravely wear the look without going overboard.

From winged liner paired with a classic red lip, to smoky eyes and a bright berry lipstick, our Beauty Panel demonstrates how to pull off a bold look with ease.

When I’m going for a look that has both statement eyes and lips, I keep the rest of my makeup simple.

For this look I decided to do a dramatic cat eye and an orange-red lip. To make sure the look wasn’t over-the-top I kept my eyeshadow to a minimum and only used a light wash of blush on my cheeks.

I used the Nars smudge proof eyeshadow primer to make sure my eye makeup didn’t budge all day. For eyeshadow I used the Urban Decay Naked Basics palette with W.O.S all over the lid and Naked 2 in the crease. I then created a cat eye with Mabelline’s gel eyeliner and a bent eyeliner brush. To warm up my cheeks I used the Bourjois cream blush in 02 Healthy Glow, which is a peachy orange colour. Finally, I used a Joe Fresh matte lipstick in Poppy for a bold pop of colour.

I think pairing statement eyes and lips sounds a lot more daunting that it actually is. Just look at Marilyn Monroe, who was known to pull off the look flawlessly!

A huge fan of the winged liner look, I like to put a twist on an old classic with a shimmery bronze liquid liner. Try Urban Decay’s 24/7 Liquid Eyeliner in Smog. Navy is also another great option that’s a little unexpected while still having the same feel.

Adding a fresh vibe to a classic look, I like to stay away from true red shades on my lips, and prefer something more orange-hued. Bobbi Brown’s Art Stick in Sunset Orange is my go-to shade for this look. To amp up the orange even further, top with a lightweight orange-toned gloss such as CoverGirl’s Succulent Citrus.

Voilà, now you’re ready to knock them dead, you vixen you!

Fall is around the corner, and after a natural, lightweight summer, I am craving some bold makeup! Sometimes it can be difficult to choose between which look to wear; bold eye or bold lip? Why not both?! The key to rocking a bold eye and lip at the same time is to ensure the underlying tone of both your lipstick and your eyeshadow are in sync. Here, I’ve done a warm smokey brown eye with a warm cranberry red. If you prefer cool-toned colours, pick a red with blue undertones to match your grey smokey eye. Another tip is to keep the blush and bronzer light and natural. Your eyes and lips don’t need to compete with anything else on your face, and a clean, flawless base will help them pop even more!

Makeup is all about balance, so there is absolutely nothing wrong with making a statement on both the eyes and lips as long as both are equally defined. My favourite bold-on-bold pairing is a cat eye liner plus bright pink lips. With the two beauty focal points, it’s important to keep the rest of the face subdued but still light and fresh. On the cheeks, I skipped the blush (to keep focus on the lips) and opted instead for a light bronzer. To keep the rest of the face fresh, I added a bit of cream highlighter to the cupids bow above the lip and to round out the look, I added a pale, shimmery shadow to the inner corner of the eyes to brighten and balance out the shine from the lip colour.

Whenever I wear a statement look like cat eyes and pink lips together, I always go with a natural canvas. That means no foundation, blush or highlighter because I want all the focus on my lip and eyes. To get a a clean cat eye, liquid liner is key. It’s also fun to play with your cat eye shape. To make your eyes pop add gold to your inner corners. As a woman of colour, when looking for a pink lip colour always go with the one that has a blue base.
