How to Do Your Makeup if You’re Going to a Summer Wedding

What’s the cardinal rule of weddings? Don’t overshadow the bride. Whether you’re a bridesmaid or a guest, you want to look elegant and put together without stealing the bride’s thunder. Wearing a white dress is obviously a big no-no, but makeup rules are a little bit trickier. The key? Neutrals. Think lightweight foundations or BB creams, eyeshadows in various shades of pink, beige or brown, soft liners, full lashes, and a hint of lipstick or gloss. This is not the time for a full face beat, complete with black lips.

If you’re still unsure, be sure to check out our Beauty Panel’s summer wedding makeup looks for inspiration.

I love to keep wedding makeup natural and simple. It’s not my day, so over the top trends and glitz are not my go-to for wedding season. Pick one point of drama/interest, for this look I went with a bold lip. Another option, a smoky eye with a subtle lip for example. Think less is more… The majority of weddings I attended have an element early in the day during direct sunlight hours, transitioning to a night portion indoors with low lighting. I keep my skin for the day as natural as possible, daylight can be very unforgiving for high coverage foundations for example. So the theme of less is more completely apples again. Why not opt early in the day for a tinted BB cream with SPF and build on a fuller coverage foundation for the evening. Because it can be a long day I like to also use a setting spray and primer. These 2 steps are lifesavers for the longevity of your chosen look.

We all have that very safe, go-to makeup look that we fall back on. For me it usually involves a matte eye with warm brown shadows, black mascara, paired with a subtle nude lip. But for wedding season, I try to spruce up my old routine by adding a bit of colour—pinks and purples. For my eyes, I like to bring in a bit of shimmer, so I bust out M.A.C’s “Fabulous Three” eyeshadows, which is a trio that includes a nude, a champagne, and a maroon—all with some shimmer. To stray from my regular old black mascara, I use the Diorshow Mascara in “Pro Mahogany,” which gives a subtle but fun wash of colour to my lashes. And for my lips, I use Too Faced “Melted Chihuahua” which has a bit more presence than a plain nude lip.

One of my favourite summer activities is being a guest at a wedding. In all honesty, I get so giddy whenever a wedding invitation arrives. In between those times I often sit and think about who out of my friends or family will tie the knot next so we can celebrate some love and have a great get together. It’s also a wonderful excuse to put on a party dress and do some fun primping!

When it comes to makeup for attending a wedding, I’m into looking polished but not overdone (it is the bride’s big day after all!). Natural tones on the eyelids, with a crisp liner and full lashes appear clean and simple. With a neutral pout you’ll have minimal upkeep, which means you’ll spend less time worrying about touching up your shade of lipstick and have more time to bust a move on the dance floor! Another bonus: natural makeup goes with any outfit!

As a guest, I want my makeup to be as lowkey as can be. Weddings are usually a full day thing. Your makeup has to last 10 hours or more with minimal touch ups. You never know when you will be dragged into a picture or called in to help move boxes from the ceremony to the church!

I prefer lash extensions lately because they’re low maintenance and cut my getting ready time in half. I decided to go with Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in “Aria.” It’s an extremely long lasting lipstick. It can withstand a lot—a kiss, food or brush against a white dress! Yikes! But you get the point.

Products used: Make Up For Ever Step 1 Mattifying Primer & Radiant Primer in “Caramel,” Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Cover Foundation in “Chestnut,” Nudestix Eyebrow Stylus Pencil & Gel in “Brown/Black,” Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in “Aria.”

Summer weddings are such fun moments to celebrate love and life! I prefer to take everything in a light and effortless way from my outfit to my make-up and hair. After all, I am there to celebrate two people getting married so they really should have the spotlight!

Chic or messy pony tails are perfect for outdoor weddings where summer heat may wreak a havoc on more elaborate hairstyles. I pick one feature to highlight and that’s I choose lips instead of eyes. Why? Lipsticks are much easier to re-apply between drinking and dancing than eye make-up. Who wants to spend more time re-touching when you can have more time celebrating!

Products used: Quo Makeup and Contour Kit, SST Cosmetics Mascara, Joe Fresh Foundation and Highlighter, L’Oreal Highlighter Powder, Reversa Sunscreen mixed with Vichy BB Cream, Stila Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in “Feore” mixed with NYX in “Tea and Cookies.”
